British regional accents and rock vocals.

It seems many Brits adopt a "mid Atlantic" accent when singing rock. Some pronounced British accents do have an element of cool about them in a rock song. EG  Some London accents, Manchester, and of course, Liverpool.

I'm from the South West and, novelty and traditional folk acts aside, the only "rock" singer I can think of with a pronounced West Country accent is Mutter Slater of Stackridge (and there is a hint of whimsy there, and its pretty far from main stream rock, check out "The Galloping Gaucho" )

Any more singers with more unusual (for rock) regional accents.

Most of the time they mask their real accents well. Look at Brian Johnson of AC/DC. Speaks Geordie (like me after a few drinks when I forget I'm in America) but you would never know it from his vocals. Actually I can hear hints of it in his vocals but I have a highly trained Geordie radar.

That's strange Sharke, I was just about to cite Brian Johnson of an example where you could hear it, Ozzy Osbourne's another one that springs to mind.

I think the most surprising accent to singing voice differential was the late great Freddie Mecury. I was shocked when I first heard him speak in an interview.

It's quite funny hearing 'Jon Anderson from outer space' slip into pure English midlands from time to time.

Yep - the line "Stand and fight, we do consider" from Gates of Delirium springs to mind, but surly its Lancashire? Jon is from Accrington (or maybe Zog). I always liked the Rick Wakeman quote "Jon spent most of the 70's trying to save this planet while living on a completly different one"

    Hi,

I was thinking about albums where the accents are pronounced and then some ... and the one that came up was ...

Small Faces -- Ogden's Nut Gone Flakes.

The guy from XTC is also strong. And I always thought a box of paints was more fun than a box of chocolates, but I'm sure a few ladies will disagree!

I was running over my head some of the Welsh stuff and even though they have an accent, when it came to music ... I can't say that I ever noticed it, other than the Sospach Pan singing club ... but I thought that was a joke though they could give Mickey a run for his yodeling and lala's.

Yes - of course, Gloucester or Wiltshire??

As for Welsh, Cerys Mathhews (Catatonia) sang with a strong Welsh accent, remember "Road Rage"

And I thought that Ogden's Nut Gone Flakes would get a faster mention ... you don't even have to be stoned to enjoy some fun stuff in there ... "wouldn't it be nice .... " not Strummy's style I don't think -- but it was the birth of a couple of his faves!

How many people know that Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, with his impeccable English, spoken & singing, hails from Dunfermline in Scotland?

Interesting how many musicians and actors from Scotland manage to shed that stigmata and find success despite it. I'd never have guessed Ian Anderson was a Scot. There must be some special school up there, like the ones here in the U.S. that teach up-and-coming broadcasters how not to talk like a southerner.

I believe it was David Frost who either coined the phrase "Mid-Atlantic" or at least was the first to have it applied to him. Not coincidentally, he was also the first British talking head to enjoy success in America. Paved the way for Benny Hill.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Anderson didn't live in Scotland that long, you can hear more of a Blackpool twang in his singing, especially on words like 'morning'.
