British to American Translation Needed
There are two commonly used pejorative terms I hear occasionally in BBC America TV shows: "wanker" (or is it "whanker"?) and "tosser". Now it takes very little imagination to figure out to what "to wank" is referring to. But what is a "tosser"? Surely it can’t be insulting to accuse someone of just being a light sleeper.

It's the same as 'jerk'..you're not berating them for walking in a sporadic, angular fashion..

The British use of slang is a bit bizarre even for the natives. I've actually heard somebody use the sentence "He's a total effing C..., but he's a nice bastard". Figure that one out...  In the context it was used in and as far as I could make out it meant "He's a stickler for the rules but he has a good heart".

Yeah, I had figured out that much. What I'm curious about is how "tosser" came to be an insulting term. Certain primates reportedly toss their excrement, for example, but I doubt the type of people who came up with the idea of using "tosser" as an insult were sophisticated enough to make that kind of analogy.

Tosspot is a much older word (appears in Shakespeare I think) and really means a heavy drinker or regular swiller of beer, wastrel.

'Ponce' originally meant 'pimp' and people still use it in a related sense of someone who scrounges off others e.g. 'he's always poncing off other people' - like the milder American 'freeloader'. But it's also a wider general form of abuse. 'Div' is much milder and describes someone who's a bit goofy - it's not considered all that offensive, whereas you wouldn't call someone a 'ponce' in front of your granny.
