"Broken Angel" (Power Ballad)

"Broken Angel" (Power Ballad)

Hi, guys,

I just uploaded a test mix for a new song called "Broken Angel".  This one was really a bit different than usual for me because instead of writing it on guitar, like 99.9% of my stuff, I wrote this one on the piano.

If you have three minutes to check it out, as always, any and all helpful comments, suggestions, constructive criticism, input and ideas are welcome, and also greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any observations, suggestions, comments and ideas!
Bob

Using a different instrument to write, from what you normally use, sure has the ability to open new doors.

This sounds good Bob. Since it's a test mix I assume you have slightly more work to do. But it sounds good at this point too.

I really like this Bob - great, very hooky song. Definitely a 'single'
The only thing I would change is the kick seems a little busy - it would be more powerful with a straight 4 on the floor kick IMO.

Nice keys! Always enjoyed your vocals. Nice melody line. As you probably know and likely going to do...a tighten up on the drum track in terms of timing and this is all set!

    Hey, Herb,

Thanks for checking it out and commenting!

Yes, you're definitely right about songwriting on something other than your "main instrument" giving you a different perspective while writing.  It can be a refreshing way to stimulate new song ideas that wouldn't normally come up while noodling around on your usual instrument.

By the way, excellent job on your new post, "The Best Christmas", really good stuff, Herb!

Thanks again for the listen and kind words, have a good one, buddy!

    Wow top rocks Bob.
I agree the bass drum is a bit out of touch with the band.
    Great guitars.
The vox seems to be flanged or chorused at times and it throws me off a bit thinking there is a pitch thing happening.
    a very pro mix overall.
    Thanks for sharing.

dude- this is great. ya know, the piano is reminding me of Motley Crue "Home Sweet Home" in its tone and rock ballad flavour.
think this is a working-mix-in-progress so you'll probably play with the levels more- but there is not much to tweak- maybe the drums a bit-

interesting and effective power ballad.  also dude you have one of the best voices i have heard in a long time.  there are instances where it sounds scarily like Ozzy, and that can only be a + in my book.

    well done.  impressed!

So rarely do I get to comment on a test mix of yours. It is very polished sounding already, though I might carve out more space for the bass and low toms. Bob, please take the following for what its worth, which is very little: You have a distinctive vocal mix style. I would like to see you change it. Carve out less lows on it, use less effect (or a warmer mike). You have a fantastic voice, don't be afraid to show it, and maybe begin to challenge it a bit. - Cheers, Shad.

Hey Bob, nice job on this! Pretty solid for a test mix. Kick drum seemed a bit loud to me, but other than that, sounding good so far. Can't wait to hear this all done! :)

Another great tune, Bob! Looking forward to future versions. Vox is right where it should be, IMO. The drummer and bass player don't seem to be on speaking terms, but I'm sure the producer will whip them into line.

Excellent piano intro Bob, makes a great break from the usual crunchy guitar (That is radio friendly without doubt).

Very strong melodically, actually one of your strongest and has a little more laid back pop feel about this (Similar to sum 41 - pieces).

    Sweet guitar solo.

    Since its a draft I'm gonna say two things and I don't care if you use them or not, this thing is in anthem as is;

    (1) I would change the kick sound, I think it sounds too metal for this particular song (and the drums do need tightening as others have said). I would maybe even consider some subtle changes to distinguish it from your other drum tracks, like using more toms on the main beat etc

    (2) I think you should change the melody notes of "broken angel" to a more major chord, sounds a bit cold and sinister (metal rock sounding) more so cos the rest of the song is popish and "warm" ,I think it would fit better.  I don't know what key this is in, I'm not near an instrument, but I would use the major chord instead of the minor one on those words, from ear it sounds like the root chord in whatever keys its in (chord at 0:07).

Either way, its gonna rock. You asked for advice and thats what I would suggest :-). Good stuff Bob as always, this one is worth the effort.

Bob, this is terrific!  I don't think you have far to go to make this into a classic.  I like the piano, and I think your voice fits this very well.  Color me impressed!!

    Bob,

Really catchy tune, I like what you have done with the piano.    My only suggestions would be to tame the kick.   I think it is a little busy in parts and the song to me is more pop oriented, the nail in the kick metal sound (to me my ears)   sounds a bit out of place with the rest of the song.  Add another harmony vocal to the chorus and you have a top 40 hit on your hands.    Really fine song.

Bob - once again the drums and guitars don't add up - they are just out of time dude. it is spoiling your stuff, cos this song is a little different, a bit slower and more ballady, i love the piano. how do you do the drums - is it e-drums or programmed?

All mix comments aside, I LOVE IT! The piano adds a nice touch and the guitars come in just right. One small nit though...the harmonies at the end go into minor when your piano chords are major.
