Not to beat an old cliche to death, but why is cancer the only disease that is routinely battled? And what is this battle anyway? It is not like people routinely submit to being conquered by strep throat, syphilis or endocarditis. Do they not battle those diseases by undergoing treatment? And why do people who die from cancer always lose their battle? Watching someone fight for every breath while suffering from emphysema looks a lot more like a battle than a trip to the oncologist, but although people die from other diseases in great numbers, apparently they are never defeated in battle. Sometimes they succumb to, but more often they just die of other diseases. I for one would find it refreshing if the news about some poor sod with the big C were that he is suffering from cancer, or receiving treatment for cancer or dying of cancer.
