Bryan Lee - Left Hook (Techno)

I'm curious what you guys think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmPkQJRYtNk It's been 8 years since I've put out any music and figured it's time to take up that old hobby again.

Well, that was nearly five minutes of essentially the same drum beat/loop repeated over and over. Mostly, all cake and no icing. Do you consider this to be finished or a work in progress? As it is now, it could be the background music of a safari movie.

Lynn, with all due respect, this is techno. It is not about verse, chorus, bridge. For basic old school techno this meets all the criteria. What is fascinating to me, is that 20 years on, "techno" is now one of the major genres, outselling "Rock" by a wide margin if you include the fusion of techno and hip hop of the last five to eight years or so.

My only crit is it sounds pretty good but is dated. Take a look at dubstep to see where techno is today. Its similar but there are subtle differences that stand out (in particular the beat, effects, and style of progression). Instrumentation is actually ok for today as modern techno is going more old school.

Hi Foxwolfen, Thanks for the clarification...yes, techno isn't for everyone as it is inherently repetative - more meant as a form of "meditative music" lol. Dated? Possibly so, but I did this tune for personal enjoyment only, and I love the old school :). That crunchy, old school vibe was what I was aiming for, so it's good to hear you picked up on that immediately. Glad to hear this tune is doing alright compositionally as well.

Point taken.  Using that criteria, upon second listen this piece is more interesting than I was giving credit for.  I've written pieces that border on this style.  I'd call it more "trance", but it does change subtly over time.  Considering your goals, this is a fine example of this style of music.  Nuff said.
