Build an ABY box or buy?
I need an ABY box for my acoustic guitar. Output A will go to the board directly and Output B will go either through a line booster, effect unit or amp. I have researched online how to build one but I don't have alot of confidence from what I have read that it will turn out without pops or hums. Has anyone built one of these? Is it quiet? How much did you pay? Thanks for your input. Rimshot

I'd estimate that it would cost me $35 to $40 in parts to make one of these: http://www.musiciansfrien...itcher/150757000000000 The push switch is about $10/per. The jacks are $2/per. The box is $8-10. I'm not sure where the power for the LEDs comes from... but figure another $3 for that stuff. Is it worth doing it yourself? best regards, mike

I bought a Morley ABC box and it's not bad. I'm getting a little hum because it's not transformer isolated but I'm working around that.

I have a DI box after the BigShot, so I guess I've never noticed if there's any hum coming from it. the DI box is the last thing in the chain before the connection to the board.

Mike, thanks for the info. Dave and Beable, thank you too. I thought I would learn about building this but I think I might run into some noise so its going to be off to ordering one online. I appreciate the feedback. Thanks. Rimshot

Other than the possibility of a ground loop hum, a "homemade" box should work OK.

Rimshot, This is the busy season in Florida but it's winding down as the "snowbirds" head north. I've been doing a lot of recording. One of my clients, Jimmy Peppers (BMI), just scored a publishing contract with Hank Williams Jr. He is an ex Nashville songwriter that walked away from it 20 years ago. Now retired as a musican ever gets he got the itch to do some writing. I've done 4 or 5 CD projects for him and this one seems to have finally hit. When he was writing, he had Jack Greene's first top 10 hit, a #1 for Dottie West and many recorded by Nashville singers in the late 60's/early 70's including about 20 that have been recorded by George Jones over the years,. He was George Jones' band manager in the "no show" days and also did some major label producing. Sort of a feather in my cap that he likes what I do and my mixes. The CD I did for him two years ago he told me sounded like it came from Bradley's Barn (which used to be THE studio in Nashville).

Love Farewell Party. Great job. Sounds really good! Very clean. The Jimmy Pepper song is"Here Comes the Rain Again" is wonderful. Super good job on your production and playing. There is so much good space in your mixes! "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" is fine too! Great playing. I am very impressed with your work Jack. Keep me posted. I can learn a lot from you. All the best. Jim

Wow! Thanks for the great comments. Mixing tradional country is much different from the current "rock country" that is coming out of Nashville now. I was at a studio in Nashville last August and the owner told me "we aren't recording country anymore". Traditional country is all clean instruments, no overdrive/distortion on the lead instruments and no power chords. The bass is still part of the rhythm section. Jack
