Bunch of X3 beginner questions....

Hi, just forced to update from 8.3 (which I loved and was very happy with) to X3d.  But I'm trying not to be grumpy about it, there's tons of cool stuff in X3.  I will try to keep all my questions to one thread but if anyone can help me out much appreciated...!

To start with, 3 big questions:

#1 I haven't really been on this forum a ton since they changed the formatting/look of it a while back.  I find it frustrating and haven't found a way to change it.  Is there something wrong with the search function?  I've tried using Explorer, Chrome, Firefox... for example I search for "colors" or "color scheme" and nothing comes up.... am I being an idiot?  Either I'm an idiot or the search is broke or both.  Also it's constantly telling me to "wait a while" before trying another search, which is not helping a n00b like me.

#2 Is there really no way to change the background dark grey colors of the track pane and the track list?  I can change the text color but not the track background... the dark colors are killing my eyes.  I may be missing it but it looks like you can change every color on the planet except the 3 that I really want to change... the track view background, the track list background, and the annoying light-blue on a selected track...?

#3 My folder system and order of tracks keeps getting completely rearranged every time I add or remove a track.  How do you preserve the folders in order?

Much thanks for any help.  A couple of smaller things as well:

You can't select a track anymore by clicking on the name?  I will have to unlearn how I always select tracks...

Can anyone point me towards an online (non-video) tutorial on learning ACT?  I'm finding it very confusing.  Anyone happen to have a control surface for a Yamaha 02R96 or a Yamaha XF8?

Any one happen to have an INS file for a Yamaha XF8, Novation Mininova, or a Dave Smith Morpho?

Hi Matt . . . sorry I don't have complete answers to all your questions, but one thing jumps out to me, are you running Sonar X3d on Vista ? (I don't think that's officially supported). . . or haven't you updated your signature yet ?

If you're searching for information on changing the color scheme, have you tried getting your hands on the PDF manual ? The forum search feature does not let you search endlessly, you only get one chance to get it right, then you have to wait a bit to search again.

To change the track background colors in X3d there is a new bar on the far left on the track view (at the bottom of the channel strip in console view) which will pop up with options to change the background colors.

Cakewalk by Bandlab, Cubase, RME Babyface Pro, Intel i7 3770K @3.5Ghz, Asus P8Z77-VPro/Thunderbolt, 32GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 250 GB OS SSD, 2TB HDD samples, Win 10 Pro 64 bit, backed up by Macrium Reflect, Novation Impulse 61 Midi Key Controller, Tannoy Active Near Field Monitors, Guitars by Vantage, Gibson, Yamaki and Ovation.

The forum's search facility has never worked properly. Ignore it and use Google Advanced Search instead.

A faster way to search the Cakewalk (or any other) forum:
- to go Google
- type your search like this (based on the searches quoted in the original post):
     colors site:forum.cakewalk.com
OR
     "color scheme" site:forum.cakewalk.com

No turnaround time and you get the benefit of Google's more precise search algorithms.

Have asked several times for 'wait a while' to be reduced, it's extremely annoying. The functionality is designed to stop DDOS attacks however it set extremely conservatively. It's just a matter of reducing a parameter by at least half. I hope Cake are listening... Otherwise search works for me.

Re: Bunch of X3 beginner questions.... 2014/01/25 08:13:54 (permalink)
Yes sorry ignore the signature I'm in the middle of a major move and will update when I get settled in.  I'm on Win 7 now.  Had to upgrade because from Kontakt 5.2 to 5.3 they decided it would no longer run on Vista so if I wanted to play any new samples I had to ditch Vista which meant ditching 8.5 as well.

Thanks this helps a ton, I didn't know about the color button on the track view.  What I was actually looking for was "view background" (even/odd) colors.... I just didn't know what to call it but google search helped me find it.

Now anyone know how to change the rest of the colors I don't like?  The colors of the volume/pan on the left side of track view, the background color of the left side of track view, the light-blue background color of the selected track name, and the horizontal black lines in the clips pane....?

What a drag about the search function, it seems to create a situation where 100 people will ask the same question 100 times if they can't search for an answer.  I will use google from now on.

I guess by searching google maybe there are mods for sonar I can install to change the colors but I'd like to make sure I'm not missing something obvious first.  Speaking of mods, didn't I edit a file once to get my MSR buttons on the right side?  Anyone have a link on how to do this?

Thanks!

The light-blue background color of the selected track name and the horizontal black lines in the clips pane can't be changed (the latter can be hidden, though).  The colors of the volume/pan on the left side of track view...I haven't tried these so I don't know. The background color of the left side of track view........where?

Good... how do you hide the horizontal lines in the clips pane?  I can't find it...

To answer one of my original questions, the folders jumping around whenever I add/erase tracks seems to be a bug only inherent to empty folders, once I add tracks to the folders they are behaving better.

Re: Bunch of X3 beginner questions.... 2014/01/28 12:51:14 (permalink)
My eyes are killing me from reading forum posts and help topics about colors.  As much as I can figure out, there's no way to change the background of clips in a track universally, only the foreground color.  (You can change the background of each individual clip in the clip inspector but that doesn't do a ton of good).  This is a big dissapointment to me coming from 8.5 but I suppose I will get used to it.

My next question is, what good does changing the forground colors do ("1, 11, 21, etc") when those numbers don't seem to actually correspond to the actual tracks?  For example, I created my first 10 midi tracks by creating 1 midi track and then duplicating it 9 times.  So all 10 of these tracks use the track color for 1, 11, 21, etc.  I want those tracks to default to 1, 2, 3, etc without having to individually change (override the default) for every track.

In 8.5 there was an option in the inspector for each track you could set it to "set default track color to 1, 11, 21, etc" but I don't see anything like that in X3d.

I'm going to go change my signature to reflect X3d....

Not that I've tried this, but, what happens if you select the clips, go to the Clip Inspector for one of them, and then make the change while holding down the Control key?  That's the standard SONAR quick-grouping modifier key.

Yes this works quite well.  But you would have to do it every time.  As soon as you record a new clip it will have the old background color again.

Here's another question probably asked a thousand times but I can't figure it out.  Is there a way to float the track view undocked?

This is one of undesirable changes introduced in X3. Those who have been using different colors for clip backgrounds by instrument type must have been disappointed. Strangely, I've only seen 4 threads (including this one) mentioning the issue since the release of the version, though.

Matt
My next question is, what good does changing the forground colors do ("1, 11, 21, etc") when those numbers don't seem to actually correspond to the actual tracks? For example, I created my first 10 midi tracks by creating 1 midi track and then duplicating it 9 times. I recommend (manually) assigning colors to tracks by instrument type, but if you prefer using the "1, 11, 21, etc" feature, I think it's worth submitting a bug report (Problem Reporter: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/contact/default.aspx ). And if they confirm it as a bug, come back and post the issue number here so that CakeAlex can list it in the first post of this thread: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Outstanding-Issues-as-of-X3D-UNOFFICIAL-and-general-comments-m2952585.aspx
