Burning walls - with vocals test
Hi everyone, This one is a rock number... I'd like to ask you to listen to the music... I'll have to resing it (little struggle)... Please share your honest opinions... (don't be polite... "hit me with the truth"!) https://soundcloud.com/us...0/burningwalls/s-GgfFU (INFO: it's not your speaker or headphone... I have audio protection on the track... so it mutes a few times) Always be careful with volume level! THIS IS AN UPDATE! - with test vocals

This is a terrific backing track. Quick! Slap some vocals on it before it burns itself up... ~Allan

For me as old rocker is to much keyboards, too little variety, boring on a permanent basis. It could punch a little more. Drums more rocklike. Of course with vocals could sound much better, depending on the kind of singer that sings.

@Allan Thank you for taking the time... I'll try to do my best with the singing game... tough for me. @Harry Thanks for taking time to listen a and to comment. Boring? ... Well I am using the verse guitar theme for chorus as well (with a little keyboards)... it is on purpose! Singing melody is completely different there! ... but I might have a look at that chorus giutar theme.. who knows... maybe I can alter it. Keyboards? I like keyboards especially strings in rock! Punchy? I'll have a look at that. Drums? Personally I am fine with the drums! Yes with singing (+extra vocals) it should sound different. This is not a hard rock song. It is a soft rock kind of thing with focus on the rhythm so it has a different approach! Thank you all!

Psych Furs? Echo y los Bunnymen? What great territory this is! Your instrumental mixture sounds really great. I'd comment on pulling back the reverb a bit, but no, that's not what the 80's were about, so it's great! I think the bass guitar could get away with a little more volume and more info below 150hz. But as presented, it nails the perky '80's busy bass vibe. Vocals? They don't sound bad. They need to be up louder, 'cause it's hard to hear the lyrics 100% of the time. Your voice has a listenable, vulnerable quality, and your English accent definitely fits the bill! Killer beginning, will check back for more. cheers, -Tom

@Tom Thanks you for taking the time to listen and to reply! Yes, basically I love the 80's rock... kind of soft-rock dimension... and also the "busy bass vibe". I love to use it! You might be right about the reverb and the frequencies. I'll have a look and try to do my best. Thanks again!

Your voice fits the music very well but I can't understand the lyrics - too low in the mix. I really wanted the chorus (around 2:00) to stand out and I think you could do that with a bit more instrumental variety and/or another vocal track. I like what you did with the short string phrases throughout to emphasize chord changes.

Certainly competitive volume wise. There's some good tonality to the vocal when he gets low...nice resonance. The track sounds tight. But back to the vocal...it sounds a tad removed from the track and the performance is not 100% assured. That's normal for a home demo...if that's what this is. There's not a lot to sink your teeth into once you've got the foot tapping down to the banging drums and the guitar riffs, there's not much variety. Also the track keeps dipping in volume. Is that so people don't steal it?

Not bad! Decent bass balance but overall harsh sounding. You need to EQ some separation between the different elements of the mix as I feel they're occupying similar sonic territory. For example, the snare, whilst it has a good thump to it, the crack of the snare is in the same range as the guitars so it feels hidden.
Vocal needs some de-essing and a space found for it the mix. Anyway, just commenting on the mix and not the song. I'd strip away the guitars and work on getting the bass and drums pumping, then bring in the guitars. I'd also EQ the guitars separately and then group them to an AUX track for further EQing as a group - I find this useful for carving out space once I'm happy with the balance between my guitar parts.

Samson Graphite 49 keyboard.

Thank you all for the comments! @Bjorn Good ideas for the vocals (chorus) I wiil work on it. @montezuma The vocals part is not final, I will resing it and make it sound different. @MagicMike Good ideas with the frequencies. I will try my best. Unfortunately I don't have a major pro studio... but I'll do my best. Guitars? I am not completely happy with them either so thanks for the "work-routine" idea!
