Bus templates?

Hi folks
Just wondering if anyone knows how or if we can do something.  I find that there are a group of fx sends that I use frequently...mostly some delays and reverbs. What I'd like to do is set them up as a template so that I can just call up my default "vox verb" or "ping-pong delay with filter" in the same way that I would with a track. The bad news is I can't find a way to save only a bus as a template.  So far my work-arounds are either:

a. set up my normal template to include those busses.  This works OK except that it slows down my initial startup time, takes memory for those plugins and potentially introduces system delay for the effects that cause latency. Essentially this makes me stuck with those effects from the beginning of my project even if I don't use them till later.

b. create a track template that uses the bus with the effects but uses a "dummy" track to save it as a template.  This works OK but for the addition of the dummy track and the fact that it seems kinda clunky.

Been searching for a way to do this for a while now with no luck so I thought I'd see if/how you folks do it (and hopefully I'm missing something obvious).

Thanks
Dean

I'm pretty sure that you have discovered the current methods for accomplishing what your attempting.  Would Bus templates be nice?  I'm sure one could find a use for them, so putting in a Feature Request would probably be a starting point, but from what you have listed I think you have what is possible now covered.

    b. is what I'd do.

Clunky to delete the dummy track? Only if I had to do it 3,761 times per day.

B here and while it could be better. i.e. insert buss template without the track, given the choice of inserting all the busses manually every time or deleting the track, I'll take the track deletion thanks.

For me, the purpose of creating a bus from a template would be to allow quicker routing from other tracks and buses, which I think can be a little clunky in sonar with the popup window approach they have now.

My suggestion for you would be to create individual fx chains just for your buses (create a bus folder in fx chains). That's what I've done and I like how that's working for me. Example, "vox reverb" "drum room" "parallel comp" "color eq", "two-bus", etc. (maybe I should create an "etc" chain!)  :)  Right click --> add a bus --> drag/drop the bus fx chain from the browser...

Some of my bus chains only have one fx in the chain, while others have several - - but the chain acts as an organizer for not only the vst of choice, but also the settings.  Just a thought...

It's a little bit damned if you do, damned if you don't - you either could have a bus template that you would then need to do the manual routing or insert a track template with a bus already attached and delete the track (all multi-step operations).

I had a thought about Musicroom's suggestion and unfortunately it does not work, but would be a good solution if it did.  Have the ability to use Insert Send Assistant allow the selection of FX Chain presets in the Choose Effect option, this way from one tool you could add the send, define the Bus name, handle the routing, and add the FX Chain you wanted.  Unfortunately, you can only add the FX Chain container and not a preset from the Insert Send Assistant.

According the what the OP wanted - I wouldn't say it doesn't work... cause it does.

You do have to manually insert the bus and then drag/drop the fx chain. But that is all the OP wanted - he wasn't looking for track routing. Which if that was the case, track templates are the absolute cure. He wanted his bus to be locked and loaded with the fx's he liked - template style. I think fx chains for buses work well for that - it's just one extra drag and drop.

And your fx chain will contain the presets it was saved with. So all the OP has to do is tweak and save...

My idea was a bit of a take on the whole thing - it would be nice if you could select FX Chain presets in the Insert Send Assistant window is all I was saying with the second part.  As it stands now you can only select the FX Chain container and not the preset you want when using it.  It would allow for single tool to create the entire multi-effect bus.

    Hi folks,
Thanks for the suggestions and feedback. I think it's off to the feature request page for me :)

I think my ideal would be the ability to select multiple tracks, right click, go to the Insert Send wizard and have the option of choosing a Bus Template from there with the selected tracks routed to it. In the meantime I'll probably use the dummy track method....might have to have a look at fx templates as well tho...thanks again for the suggestion.

I hear you on that - I think the whole Sends Routing portion of sonar could use a major upgrade.
