But I am NOT clipping!!
Hello Everyone, Sometimes the clipping meter on a softsynth track shows RED even though I am not clipping! I am coming in at around -25 db RMS and peaking around -18 db. Has anyone ever seen this odd behavior before? Thank You, Adam

What do you mean by a soft synth track? You may be seeing the MIDI meters if its a simple instrument track.

Yep. The MIDI meters will do that every time the synth is triggered.

Interesting question.
Most of my MIDI projects were created with much older versions of Cakewalk, and in both X1 and X2 they not only keep the meters red most of the time, they also do penetrate into clipping. Not audibly, just meter wise.
I'm still buried w config, not mixing seriously, but I'll be interested to see what the old hands have to say on this.

The MIDI meters show an event (the red lights up) this can be any MIDI event, and the velocity of a note being played is shown on the rest of the meter.

Hello Everyone,
I am talking about the CLIPPING meters! Not MIDI Action lights. If i turn the synth down to around -30 RMS, the clipping light goes from RED to YELLOW, so I KNOW its the clipping light. Seems like some strange anomaly that makes no sense but not sure. Thanks, Adam

When the audio meters clip a red light comes on at the very top and stays on. They have to be reset. If it comes on and off over time its not an audio meter. Did you adjust the gain?

For the record, the meter in a Simple Instrument track is always the Audio meter. The MIDI meter can only be seen by splitting the track or showing the MIDI tab of Track Inspector. But I'm with John that it might be the audio Input Gain is cranked up; this can only accessed by splitting the Simple Instrument track. The Gain widget in the Track Inspector is always MIDI Velocity Offset, regardless of which tab is showing (a pet peeve of mine). Gain can only add 18dB, though, so that might not explain it. Possibly being in Offset mode is obscuring the cause.

Where are you seeing this if not in the track meter? Is this the output level shown in the soft synth GUI? I think we might need some screenshots.

Maybe it's a K-meter set to K-20?

In 32bit floating point, you can clip tracks without actually hearing any clipping or artifacts. CJ

I have the same problem in X3, and also had it in X2, and possibly X1 (I can't recall for sure). The meter in simple instrument tracks is very flaky. When it shows that I'm clipping, I reduce the volume slightly, and it still surges into the red. Then I keep reducing the volume little by little, until the red goes away. At that point the volume is very low and nowhere near clipping. I've stopped relying on the meters, and use my ears instead.

Mleghorn I do exactly the same thing cause it happens to me as well on synth tracks ,since sonar 7 pro audio.I think something wrong is happening to the meters in synth tracks. It would be nice to be looked at, now that it was mentioned here. Peace

So what happens if you use split midi/audio tracks?
