Butter on My Toast by Jesse Q. Screed...with stats... bust my chops PLEASE

Good Morning Campers,

Sorry to be such a pest, but I am trying to hone my skills.  Please listen to this new mix and bash the living heaven out of it if you wish.

http://www.soundclick.com...ngid=13262425&q=hi

Here are the Amplitude Stats, according to AA6.
Possibly clipped samples.....300
Total RMS....-13.95
Max RMS...-4.35
Min RMS....-79.30
Avg RMS...16.27
DNR....75
DNR Used...68.00
Loudness....-13.00
Perceived Loudness....11.7
LUFS....14.60

Can anyone reply if I am in the ballpark?  Or am I looking in a dark room?
The angle I want to explore is transient vs  amplitude.  Trying to make that connection between fast attack to resolution and slow attack to resolution.  There is a crossover there somewhere.  Still mulling it over.

Thanks, give it to me...

Can't help you there Jesse, 'cos I have very little idea what any of that means, or if it's relevant to what I'm hearing.

It occurs to me that to get such detailed advice you'd be better off posting a WAV file somewhere, (I use Box.net for that) because the free Soundclick player streams at a very low bitrate.

I liked the loose groove and the bass sound. I was disappointed when the 2nd verse lyrics were the same as the first.

    That's all I got.

I would say that there is a slight overage on your A.R.S.E. settings mate.

Hello James, thanks for that.  Good notice on the second verse, I sometimes wonder if anyone listens to the words.  I know you do.  Time to write a new verse

Daryl, your right about the overs, to many, all snare hits, I wasn't hearing any distortion because each one is so fast, but you're right, I need to x them out.

Thanks fellas, your comments have proven helpful.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is the best song I've ever heard on the internet.

I like that the chords don't resolve in the usual way. They tend to leave the listener hanging.

At first I wasn't too crazy about the bass sound. But upon another listening, I found it really fits into the context of the song. Nice atmosphere.

Jesse, I liked this song the first time you posted it. :)

Here are my comments about the mix and the song itself. I should point out that I don't really know what the hell I'm talking about and my hearing is kind of ragged these days, so take all of this with a big-ass grain of salt, but I offer it in the spirit of really liking what you're doing here.

    - Very cool acoustic playing, I really like the chord progression you've got happening here. My ears wanted a bit more clarity in the mix from that guitar, perhaps a bit more sparkle?
    - I would like to have heard a more definite beat established much earlier in the song. When the drums become more apparent at the end, the song makes a lot more sense to me musically and then it ends.
    - I'd let the bass line play a couple of cycles through the introductory statement, perhaps with a stronger drum coming in during the second repeat to let my ears become better acquainted with Jesse Musicland before the vocals come in and to establish a stronger groove
    - Your vocals made me smile because your voice is a lot like mine, kind of high, kind of unusual. This can be a really good thing if you embrace it. There are some places in this song where the vocal is strong and authoritative and articulate and you really sell what's happening. This song would really be something cool if that feeling and clarity and certainty were present in the verse as well.

Keep on it, you've got something unique and I like it!

Your voice is cool and the chord changes are good.  Words...I'd rewrite.  And this is why:  your listener has to care about what you're saying.  Nobody cares about butter on toast, even if it's a metaphor for patricarchy. :D

I've previously expressed my appreciation for your utter originality, so I'll just say, very very cool.

This mix, I think the drums (snare/kick) are too buried and the bass I was wanting more, too. Put some more butter on the snare and the bass!

    cheers,
