CAPE: Team collab

Check out the quasi-organized team collaboration event called CAPE (Collaborative Audio Production Experience), now entering its 7th iteration over on The Womb. Yours truly has signed on to play keys, and it would be cool if some of my SONAR forum cohorts were there, too.

The way it works is there are three songs to choose from. You sign up to play an instrument, be the producer/mixer, or vocalist or whatever skill you have to offer. You will be assigned to a team and given a private forum just for your team. Final mixes are due December 1st, when all entries will be posted.

I don't think there is any prize or anything, just good fun and experience. It's my first time trying this, so I'm not sure what to expect, but it must be enjoyable or they wouldn't have done it 7 times!

Yup, I agree. You're welcome to volunteer to administer it :)

They also do a mix contest over there, where you are given a fully tracked song and just have to mix it. I downloaded about a dozen of the submissions so I could listen to them back-to-back and it's surprising just how different the same song can turn out in the hands of different mixers. Some took unexpected turns, others were done just the way I would have done them, in other words, perfectly.

I am soooo tempted to sign up for this .. but I have to watch my time and comittments these days - too easy to over do it. Still ... this seems like a good opportunity. I only glanced through the announcement thread at the womb. How can I hear some of the writer's other tunes to get a feel for the music type/style ? (realizing it could change radicaly based on the producer's direction of course)

Aw come on, Bill. You have three months to do one or two tracks in a straight and simple rock song. Piece o' cake.
Here are the songs, although you probably need a profile on The Womb to get to them.

Great to see that Norway will be represented, Mr. Man. What's your instrument/style? Any of your stuff accessible online, e.g. SoundClick?

EDIT: Duh, I could have just looked in the Songs forum. Listened to some of your stuff on ReverbNation - good stuff it is, too! Lyrics always sound so profoundly brilliant when they're in a language you don't understand. Make sure you list Flugelhorn on the CAPE application.

Sounds fun, but I can't keep up with what I'm into already. And since you've got keys covered, I'm sorta stuck. The only other things I play are tennis and volleyball and that doesn't really help with a song. But I hope it's fun!

Tom: saw your name appear there last night, volunteering for Producer/Mixer no less. I refrained from applying for that job, assuming they wouldn't give it to someone who's participating for the first time. Oh well, maybe they'll have such a surplus of keyboard players that I'll get a crack at it.

Janet: Forget volleyball! Waste of time! (OK, I'll admit I did enjoy the Olympic beach volleyball. It's not even a real sport, but heck, put fit gals in bikinis and you could increase viewership for any event! Uh, sorry for drifting off there...) Seriously, there will be multiple teams, so plenty of room for more keyboardists (forget the comment I made above about a surplus, I was only speculating). In fact, you could have a team made up of ONLY keyboardists. Maybe it wouldn't be ideal, but it would sure beat a team made up entirely of drummers. Janet, you have a great sense of melody and harmony that any project would benefit from. Just think about it.

Anyway, back to music. Remember the Olympics in '86?? Somewhere in the States--and they had 86 grand pianos during the opening ceremony. That was cool! And then there was the movie Drumline--it was all drummers. Also pretty cool. So yeah, maybe we CAN sound good even if we gang up on 'em. lol But seriously, I'm itching to get down some of the stuff banging around in my own head. But maybe some day. Thanks for the offer!

Sounds interesting, but I'm a little confused. What if 20 keyboard players sign up? Not sure on the details, maybe I missed them, but we could do that here as well.

What if 20 keyboard players sign up?

There is a detailed explanation of how it works here, although you may need to be a registered user to get to it.

The last time I checked, there were 45 people signed up to date, so there may very well be 20 keyboard players by the time the signup period closes.

But that's OK, because there will be multiple teams formed. If there turns out to be a large surplus of keyboard players, a team might end up with two of them. I don't think that would be a problem - I think it would be fun to have a team made up of nothing but keyboard players or guitarists.

I agree that we should do something like that here. But it's a hassle to organize it. Somebody would have to take ownership of it, ideally one of the site admins. They'd also have to create a page for it here in the forums, and they'd have to support direct uploads. So yeh, it would be fun to do something like that here, too, but I don't see it actually happening.

I remember a couple of people on this forum a few months ago formed their own SONAR forum bands. Don't know how that panned out, though.

61 people have signed up for CAPE 7 at last count. Assuming teams of 3 to 5 people, there will be a lot of material coming out of this. Teams will be announced September 7th, so there's still time to get in on this!

I noticed that there seems to be a shortage of horn players in the signups. I know there are a couple great players here...anyone?

I thought I'd make this a running diary of the CAPE experience, in case anyone's considering something like this for the future.

Today the CAPE teams were announced. 14 teams, nearly 100 participants in all. My team is called team Big Band Theory, one of the larger teams with 10 people, and the only team with horn players (3 of them, cool). Team members are from all over, including Sweden and every timezone in the U.S. Some have done this before, some haven't.
