CAUTION ! Sonar 5 REALY corrupts savefiles. (Not the DiskFull Prob)

I've switched from Sonar 4 to Sonar 5 PE for several weeks now and i experience randomly the same .cwb being corrupted problem.

As an example, sonar loads the DFH2 kit and configuration succesfuly then as he starts loading the project file i get :
" SONARPDR.EXE met/experienced a problem and must be shut down. Sorry for the inconvenience "
(French to English translation sorry)
Then i can only choose between " debugging / send error log / do not send " and cakewalk crashes displaying :
" The 0x7c2821b2 instruction use the following memory adress 0x0000001c - Memory cannot be read "

There's no way i can open that project file even if in some cases, the autosave file saved my ass but in most cases not...

That's a big problem since i'm stucked, Sonar 4 can't open those projects cause it's not backward compatible and the main project is now corrupted, hopefuly the project audiofiles are safe but i must restart from sratches

(I never had the slightest prob before switching to Sonar 5)

Have you updated to 5.01 yet? Have you tried to open in safe mode to see if a plugin is behaving badly? S5 has closed a lot of loops for badly behaved plugs from what I heard.

I really wish CW would do away with the bundle format. With per-project audio folders and XP's built-in zip file support, there's really no need, is there?

the CWB bundle file format is portable backwards (S4, S3, S2, etc.). that is .. assuming you don't have
32bit audio files in there. Cakewalk changes the format of the project file between revisions and does
not guarantee backwards compatability of the project files.. they do for bundles (at least up until they
say they're not portable) ... but so far... they've been remarkably portable.

what i'm curious about from the original post is is it a bundle or a project file? in my experience, Sonar
doesn't work on the bundle file directly .. it unpacks it .. and works on a project file. i have had Sonar
(both 4 and 5) corrupt a project file .. never have i had it corrupt a bundle file.

did you have autosave turned out (by chance)? if so, you should be able to open the autosave version
of the project just before the corruption happened. if you didn't, now's the time to turn it on....

Really? I was not aware of that. So a bundle you created with S5 will open in S2? (Providing there's no 32 or 64-bit audio, of course)

    S1? CWPA versions?

yea .. i've collaborated with someone using Sonar 2 and it was fine.. i've heard rumour it goes all the way back
    to the pre-Sonar days (CW9).

If i try to open the Sonar 5 cwb files i am talking about with sonar 4.04, it will display :
File Info : Project File Version 5.0.0, authored using SONAR version 14.0.0.1713
This file was saved from a more recent software version. It is incompatible with this version of SONAR.
    (Only 44.1khz/16 bits audio inside)

Yes, i had it turned on it saved my ass only in few cases, in most case it's corrupted as well.

The most interesting now : Those projects that got corrupted are initialy projects i made with SONAR 4, i opened them with SONAR 5 for some editing purposes, mainly on midi tracks. That means the audio parts with plugins are UNTOUCHED.
Simply opening them with SONAR 5 then saving them rendered the .cwp unusable !

(Of course it might be some plugins behaving badly only with sonar 5)

ok .. try copying the CWB file to a new folder and opening it. if that doesn't
    work .. it's a condition i'm unfamiliar with.

    jeff
ps: there are two things which cause the S5 CWB to not be readable by S4 .. 32bit
audio was one of them .. i forget what the other one was ... lemme go back
    and read previous posts....

Or try creating a brand new project onto a different hard drive--audio files and project file. Your hard drive may be about to crap out--evidenced by these corrupted files.

    It's a cwp file.

So it really is a project file, not a bundle file, correct? I'm a little confused reading this thread -- you called it a .cwb (bundle file) in your first post, but here you say it's a .cwp, which is a project file.

I wonder if you are running into a plugin that has a unicode problem?

Try loading in safe mode by holding down shift while opening. Then skip loading plugins. Most likely its a plugin that is crashing on load.

Thats not true. Bundle files are subject to the same backwards compatibility rules as project files. Bundles are simply riff files with the first chunk(s) containing the compacted audio and the last chunk containing the exact data from the cwp file.
At load time SONAR unpacks the audio and then loads the cwp file from the last bundle chunk. The same compatibility checks are performed while loading the project chunk.

S5 bundles should be downwards compatible upto SONAR 3 not below since the project file format changed quite significantly in SONAR 3 with the universal bussing.

Well, i've tried everything but Sonar 4 or 5 won't open the " corrupted " .cwp / .cwb files.
Since the 5.01 ugrade i haven't experienced any new " corruption " so let's wait and see :)

Hi Noel, That was one of the first things I suggested.
