CC events

Hi all,
Is there a tutorial somewhere that I can learn how to use CC events for things such as lowering midi note volume etc etc.. I messed with it a bit yesterday in the PRV but I didnt see any options to lower volume and such. I did copy notes down to the CC portion of the PRV, but still couldn't get anything out of it.

Any ideas?

With general midi (GM) you have the volume at controller 7 and expression at no.11.

You can use expression to "ride" the volume up and down on a track for more feel to performance while still having the general volume set by controller 7.

Even though you can set any parameter to be controlled by any controller, most synths have controller 7 and 11 set for this ..for convenience I guess.

To edit these controllers (or any) in the prv, just click the edit button and choose “new value type”. Enter the controller you want to edit (I’d try 7 first) then klick ok.

Now, at the bottom of your prv, you see the controller’s name and it’s just to start drawing.

If you want to go back and edit velocity you just click edit again and choose velocity there.

I hope this helped, cuz I don't really understand what you meant with "copy notes down to the CC portion of the PRV"?

EDIT: I just noticed that there is already a list of available controllers when you go to add one in X1.

This is fairly well explained in the documentation.  If you haven't read that thoroughly, start there.  Not sure what problem you're having based on what you've said.  For one thing, when you say volume are do you really mean MIDI volume or velocity?  As often as not, loudness is controlled by velocity, which is a value in the note-on event.  Volume is MIDI controller number 7.

If you want to edit velocity a contoller lane in the PRV, make sure notes are selected.  If you want controller 7 instead, those are events separate from note-ons.  There seems to be a bug in X1 that keeps the little "+" button (that opens a new controller lane) from showing, so that certainly adds to the confusion.  I think I found the easiest way to deal with this was to record some of the events using my MIDI keyboard before trying to draw contoller events in the PRV.  Others may be able to suggest an easier approach.

Velocity is not the issue as correcting that in the PRV is not difficult. The issue is volume of a few specific MIDI notes without changing the velocity. I was told to use CC events to get this to work.  Also, the CC section I was refering to is in the PRV at the very bottom left hand side where it says CC: 7-volume (chan 1).  When you right click in this area, the options are "copy selected events to this lane" or "move selected events to this lane".  So I selected a bunch of my midi notes (Battery 3 drums to be exact) and copied them down to this boxed area. From there, I have no idea what to do to make the volume change without changing the velocity. I tried right clicking on everything, moving things up and down..everything I could think of and there was no change.. in fact, there was nothing that happened at all besides it lighting up as if it was selected.

So for using midi drums, changing velocity for volume isn't the best idea..at least in my situation. I want the snare drum to hit hard with a lower volume, not a weak hit with lower volume.

And what was the result?  I would expect if you had no controller events selected you'd get nothing copied.  Notes and CC events are different.  I haven't played around in this area much yet in X1, but I did find it a little confusing at first.  Once I had some actual CC events, supplied via recording and adjusting the associated controller on my MIDI keyboard, I found getting in to graphically edit them was straightforward.  But I could figure out how to just start with graphic edits.  As I said earlier, there seems to be a bug in the interface that keeps the "add new controller lane" button from showing.

The preferered way to do this is with level setting on the audio track receiving the output of the snare part from Battery. You'll need to run individual outputs for each kit piece from Battery with one track for each output to get independent control of each piece, but this is the preferred setup for a drum synth as well.

MIDI volume usually controls Master output volume of the synth, so all the sounds coming from Battery would get louder or softer wtih CC7 changes.

Does X1 have the ability to make it so each cell in battery is recording to a different track at the same time?  Currently right now I am recording the bass drums and snare on 1 track, and then going to the cymbals in a different track..these have to be played at different times of course, which makes things a bit difficult.

Can I have it so my bass drums go to 1 MIDI track and my snare goes to another so I can record them both at the same time on different tracks?

Sorry I am new to the MIDI thing as I have only been messing with Sonar on a very basic level.

EDIT: I just noticed that there is already a list of available controllers when you go to add one in X1.
this is a nice option to have..when i bought the v-studio..i just went to that list..highlighted it and it was ready to go.
havent had one issue with the v-s.youd be so surprised how fast your work flow speeds up when you have faders, buttons, transport control right at your fingertips.
