CC log in / Demo mode

I don't really understand this Sonar Activation/verified stuff.
So, a few months back I was logged out of the command center. When I went into Splat I was in demo mode and I got a massage telling me to log in.
After reading a post someplace that implied that if the servers went down we could not keep Sonar Activation/Verified and it would go into demo mode and we would all be F-ed.
 
I keep two of my systems off line unless there was an update. Splat never went into demo mode unless I was logged out of the CC. But I only noticed this the one time.
 
Tonight I logged off of the CC and opened Splat, I received the massage to log into the CC or my settings would change.
Yet everything was working and in the About Sonar area it said "I still owned Sonar".
So is the CC relevant in verifying Sonar?
Has anyone else tested this?
