CD player for studio
I might be in the market for a replacement CD player for normal studio use. I realize this is small cookies but I'd like a rackmount unit. Something better than a low end Sony. Waddaya guys like?

Waddaya guys like? I have a Tascam I never use, has maybe 30 hours total play time. I'll check it when I get home and see what model it is. If you want it I'll put it on e-bay for you.

I believe I have a Teac which I added the optional rack mount kit to and basically changed it to the Tascam model (same specs). Worked good for gigs.

Yeah let me know what you got. If it seems OK I'd make a reasonable offer. If you want to go straight to eBay that's a good idea too. I was eyeballing these units here: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DNC615/ http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CD200/ These newer models do MP3 and CD text which mine doesn't do. I have an HHB CD burner I bought about 6 or 7 years ago. I had it repaired once already which wasn't cheap. It's starting to act up again. I could have bought a brand new player for what it cost me to repair the HHB. I hardly ever used it for recording. I barely use it more than a few hours a month as a simple CD player.

Well, mine is the CD 160mkII but it looks like I'm going to need to keep it. Of the two you show links to the main difference I see is that the Tascam CD200 includes a remote and the Denon doesn't. It looks like with the Denon you have to buy the remote if you want it but there are two available, that's cool.

Funny that they make you pay extra for it when almost everyone else just includes it with the unit. Denon is a good brand though. I have a Denon cassette deck here which is really nice and has held up well.

I had a musician friend who used to work for Denon. At that time their quality was unparalleled ( Must have been late 70's ). I don't believe that statement is as true as it used to be, though. Their designs are really good, but I believe my brother had trouble with his CD player and it was pricey to get it fixed. Sounds like this may be the issue you are trying to avoid with your next purchase.

I don't mind so much that something breaks and needs to be repaired. What bothers me is when said doo-dad craps out with the same exact problem shortly thereafter. I could write a book on bad repair service but maybe it's unfair to blame the bench technician who only makes seven bucks an hour. Or the repair company owner who can't seem to get paid from the audio company to which he is performing authorized warranty repair work. Frankly, I wonder why anyone would even want to be in that business. It must be old age creeping in but I am more likely to chuck or completely abandon a company and their products if I don't get reasonable life span from said product. I have a Zenith TV that predates the remote control that still works perfectly. I have a Realistic AM/FM stereo receiver I bought in 1985 that still works perfectly. I have a Sony DVD player bought in 1997 that still works perfectly. There is plenty of gear here in my studio that is turned on and working 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for the past 10 years. That's what I want in a CD player.

I think that Denon makes good quality as well. I have an amp that has basically been powered up for more than 20 years. I think Iv'e powered it down only when moving. I bought it used too.
