CDP-100 MIDI notes play on key RELEASE, not on PRESS

Hi, I don't know if this has to do with my keyboard or my Cakewalk setup. I have an old USB keyboard and this is not an issue with it, but I just got a Casio CDP-100 and am using a USB MIDI adapter to connect. Everything works great except when using soft synths, notes don't play when I PRESS a key on the keyboard, they play, instead, when I RELEASE the key on the keyboard. This isn't a latency problem, as it is EXACTLY when I release the key that the soft synth plays the note. Also, I notice that the little MIDI indicator in the taskbar lights up both when I press the key and when I release it, indicating to me that a MIDI signal IS being sent from my keyboard when I press a key, but perhaps it isn't the right kind of signal?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,

The best way to troubleshoot MIDI problems is with a utility called MidiOx.  You can download it at www.midiox.com if you don't already have it.

Close any Cakewalk software, make sure your keyboard is connected, and launch MidiOx.  Select your USB device as the MIDI input.

Now press a key and hold it.  You should see a Note On event.  Release the key and you should see a Note Off event.
If the events are reversed, the problem is in your hardware.  Probably in your USB MIDI adapter.

Its good to also check the sustain pedal because it's easy to get it reversed.  The Pedal Down event should have  a '7F' in the Data 2 column and the pedal up event should have a '00'.

    Good luck.

I thought I was having this exact same problem, but after trying midi-ox like you said, it turns out every thing is one event behind, rather than "reversed". For example, if I just opened midi-ox, I press a key and nothing shows, but when I release it the Note On event shows.

To prove that each event is one event behind, if I press and key and release it I will see the Note On event but not the Note Off. Then if I press the sustain pedal, I see the Note Off event of the key from before. Then if I release the sustain pedal (or instead keep it pressed down and press a key down), the Pedal Down (7F) shows.

This is also with a USB MIDI adapter.

I know I've seen this before, but I can't remember what was happening.

It's definitely the Casio or the Midi adapter.  You need to isolate it to one device.  Easiest thing to do is to try another keyboard or adapter.

You didn't mention which USB adapter you're using.  I know that the MidiSport adapters have had tons of issues.  http://forums.m-audio.com/archive/index.php/f-10.html

    Good luck.

The keyboard I'm using is different than the OP's; it's pretty old (can't even remember when I got it :P), Concertmate 980. I have no other keyboard to test the adapter with.

The adapter is a cheap one from eBay; the user has a store therefore many other people bought the same item. Judging by the user's feedback, other people that bought this adapter have working ones.

The adapter doesn't have a name anywhere on it, but in Windows 7 the driver is automatically found and installed, and the device is called VIEWCON. I found a site, viewcon.net, it's some Chinese company, and I can't seem to find a different driver on the site for the adapter.

Other Google results talk about the adapter not working at all, and people suggest a generic usb midi driver (which works for them), but Windows 7 won't let me install because it says it is the incorrect operating system. They also say to extract the setup file and update the driver manually, but then Windows tells me I have the latest driver already :p

I will continue searching Google but I'll probably just have to get a new adapter I suppose.

EDIT: In midi-ox, if I set up the computer's keyboard to send notes to the electronic keyboard, they play like they should: when I press a letter down, the corresponding note is played on the keyboard, and when I release that letter, the note stops (as it should). I just cannot figure out why it doesn't work like that when going from the keyboard to the PC.
