COMPLAINT: Buying Andy Johns Drums

When to Cakewalk store and bought this product.  The download page only has a Word doc telling me to go to another website to download the product.  That website forces me through a registration process.  After that, I have to log in.  After logging in, the only option is Register Your Product--no download link anywhere.

What kind of a customer-centric process is this?  I am sorry I bought this now.

Someone may come back and say, "All you have to do is..." but either the process is broken or the directions are stupid because I have been going in circles a while.  There are plenty of suppliers that don't make their customers work this hard.

I didn't have any issues at all and it is well worth the price $39.
I did have to register like you mention.
I would do it agian tomorrow if I had to.
    Just my experience

OK, product is installing.  Instructions could have been a lot better.

Product installed, but when I go to SD3 and select LOAD PROGRAM, I don't see this new kit anywhere.  I did not have this problem with the add-on acoustic kit from Cakewalk.  What am I missing here?  This should not be so difficult.

And, if you are wondering, I did rescan all the VSTs.

Where are your kits, resources, programs (content folder for session drummer) installed? Mine are on an seperate drive but I do remember I had to tell Aj platinum app where to install the content

Session Drummer normally looks here for kits:

    C: | Program Files | Cakewalk | Vstplugins | Session Drummer 3

Sweetwater set up content on C and files(projects) on D.

I let the Andy Johns thing install wherever it defaulted because I assumed (maybe stupidly) that it would put it in the same place as the other session drummer content since that's how add-ons worked before.

I can't find where this new content went.  I would think if I had to do something to make it work, that would be in the instructions.

Note: I run Sonar 64-bit but a lot of the content is stored in Program Files not Program Files (x64).  Not sure why.

By default Windows x64 doesn't setup a program files x64 structure.

    It's usually

    C:\program files (x86)    32bit
    C:\program files             64bit

If you're riunning SONAR x64 then the default folders are:

    C:\program files\Cakewalk\VST Plugins\Session Drummer 3\

To find out where installers put things you usually have to read the various dialog boxes during the installation process to find where things are being loaded.

Why don't you run the installer again and this time look where it is putting the various filies.

Maybe easiest would be to uninstall AJ drums. They are in the programs uninstall list in control panels.
Then reinstall and watch dialog boxes

Re:COMPLAINT: Buying Andy Johns Drums 2011/08/14 14:05:33 (permalink)
I kicked off the uninstaller and it said that the program would uninstall from the following locations:

    C:\Program Files(x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Session Drummer 3

    C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Session Drummer 3

I had a choice to check one or both.  So, I cancelled the uninstaller and went in to Sonar to see if Session Drummer could find the kits there.

They are in both locations under Contents\Programs\Acoustic.

This was confusing because I had already purchased an add-on from Cakewalk called "Acoustic" which is what I thought this folder was.  Andy Johns Platinum is in there with some other stuff.  (Note that the other acoustic stuff is only in the x86 path: AJ is in both.)

So, not a super-friendly process compared to other installs but it worked.  Thanks for all the help; and, Stratman, your suggestion was the key.

By the way, the XL kit is just what I was looking for.  Nothing odd or unusual--just really solid, usable kit for pop/rock/country.  And there are lots of good cymbals and a good sidestick: two things missing in some kits.

I am sure most of y'all know this, but, for anyone new, be sure to use your MIDI controller and check all the notes up from the kick drum for a couple of octaves: there are a lot more sounds than what show up on the pads in the SD3 picture.  For example, there are quite a few cymbals that you can't trigger from the picture pads, and, naturally, the sidestick is not represented.

Yeah, what's up with that?  I haven't played with SD3 yet, but only just yesterday, I did read something similar (to your comments) in a MusicTech article about Sonar and Session Drummer 3:

"Before starting with SD3, go into Sonar's Global properties and be sure Base Octave For Pitches is set to 0.  This results in middle C, which is always Midi note number 60, being called C5.  This is the least common of the three 'standards' (C4 and C3 being somewhat more customary) but this configuration coincides with the note-mapping in the Session Drummer documentation".
