CPU hyperthread useage in Sonar

I have just migrated to a newly-built PC and Sonar works fine. However, in all projects the CPU activity display now always shows most of the activity to be concentrated in the first thread, i.e. this thread always stands high above the rest. On my old one, the CPU display invariably showed an even spread of workload disribution across all the threads, with no single thread standing out. I'm looking at the same projects.

Is there some setting that I need to adjust? I compared the AUD.ini files and couldn't find any differences.

There is nothing installed on the new PC that wasn't on the old one. In fact there is even less right now, as I have not finished installing everything yet. It's the same operating system, Windows 7 Ultimate (although it may be a slightly more up-to-date version).

Are both using the same CPU Meter option? Right-click in the Performance Module to check the setting.

Did you disable core parking in Windows? That will help, and did you enable load balancing in SONAR?

Yes, it's the default setting, i.e. "Audio Processing".

...did you enable load balancing in SONAR?

I'm still on version 22.11.0.111 and I believe that this option was introduced in a later version.

Resource Monitor shows that some of the cores are parked. Sonar's CPU display contradicts this and shows activity in all of them. I don't recall disabling core parking in the previous setup, but Resource Monitor shows no cores parked, so maybe I did.

It turns out that I was wrong about that. There is a parameter in the ini file called "PluginLoadBalancing" and its value was set to 1 in the old setup and 0 in the new one. I have now set it to 1 and Sonar now shows all the cores/threads keeping to roughly the same level, with none standing out above the rest.

So problem solved. Well almost. The Resource Monitor still shows some of the cores as being parked while Sonar is showing activity in them.

Try going into preferences/configuration file /EnableSet ThreadIdealProssor, set to false.

Try going into preferences/configuration file /EnableSet ThreadIdealProssor, set to false.

After doing that, the display then showed only half the cores/threads active with double the amount of activity, so I put it back to its original value.

That doesn't sound right. :) I would go into the BIOS and make sure the CPU chip is setup correctly.
Then go back into "configuration file" and make sure that the treads and core count match your CPU.
Then set it back to false. It may also help to hit the reset default within the configuration file area and try that. :)
Sometimes you need to play around with stuff... Good luck. :)

    peace!

Hum? So core parking shows that you have parked cores? as far as core paring goes. imo ;) is an illusion that is useless.
So when you hit false in Sonar you only saw half your cores? Just like in windows? Hum?
So maybe you can try turning off core parking in windows and/or in your BIOS as well and test that.
    You never know...  :)

After some googling, I get the impression that the solution won't be simple. There seems to be no consensus on the best way to turn off core parking.

But I've got other issues right now. I'll return to this later, but maybe not today.
