CPU monitoring software
Due a compatibility problem between my Q9550's heatsink/fan and my Gigabyte EP45-UD3 (yes..., believe it or not) i had to install the cooler in a non traditional way, basically i couldn't push fully the 4 knobs into the motherboard, therefore I'm afraid this could be a problem if the heatsink is not making full contact with the processor in order to (together with the fan) cool it. in order to know it i'd have to monitor my CPU temperature for a while, i was thinking doing it from windows instead of the BIOS, then i can monitoring on the run. WHICH SOFTWARE IS RECOMENDED TO MONITOR THE CPU TEMPERATURE???? Thanks for your help. Marcos

ORIGINAL: marcosdipaolo basically i couldn't push fully the 4 knobs into the motherboard Yeah, I think installing the regular modern Intel CPU fan while the mobo's set in the case is a pain in the ass. But whenever I've been sloppy my computers have shut down in the middle of booting, no damage done. So if your computer is up and running I'm inclined to believe you're good. If not you might consider removing the mobo from the case before installing the CPU. Much easier. My mobo manufacturer (MSI) has free temp/fan/bus speed monitoring software available for download on their webpage. Maybe Gigabyte has too? Sven

There's this new site on the internet...I think it's called something like google, maybe? Seriously, I went to google and put in CPU Monitor and everything you need to know and then some shows up in the first half-dozen links. There's a bunch of software out there...Motherboard Monitor, CPUMon, Intel Monitor, etc...

My Foxconn mobo had monitors on the driver disc with the board. You may have the same. Check your program files. I can monitor critical voltages and temps for the mobo and CPU.

I use Everest free edition under the computer category is the sensor page, it will give you the temperatures of your, Motherboard, CPU,GPU and harddrives, it is also good for monitoring your voltage.

I had a hard time getting mine on as well, and it literally took me about a 1/2 hour to get it on correctly, but I finally did. I would not recommend running your CPU with a heatsink installed in a "nontraditional way" - I would continue to try to get it on correctly or get someone who has done it before to help you. maybe you know someone who works with computers at their work. speedfan, however, is a great little tool to monitor temperatures and fan speeds. http://www.download.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10067444.html

FWIW, You really don't want to use a cooler that's not mounted properly. It's akin to building a house on a crumbling/shakey foundation. Get a cooler that fits/fastens properly... and you'll never have to worry about it.

What's controlling your fan? All motherboards ship with utilities for managing the cooling fan, contolling OC voltages, etc. Mine is called Abit uGuru, and features for creating different profiles that control cooling, various voltages, etc. for differnt uses. For instance, I run a more agressive cooling profile during the summer months, when ambient temps in the office climb, but in the winter, I get by with a slower fan speed, and a wider range of temp limits for triggering the fan. If you didn't install this, then look at the CDs that came with the mobo. I'm sure Gigabyte ships a similar program.
