CTRL-A does not 'SELECT ALL' in project X3 - CWBRN-23377

I just ran into this and works as expected in 8.5

I am processing a sub bus in the track view before mixing down the project to a track for export. I press CTRL-A to select all in project. Only the busses get selected and none of the tracks.

My expectation is that everything in the project should be selected.

Anyone else run into this? Is this a new feature change? This CTRL-A select all used to work for the entire project.

I'm seeing the same behavior in 8.5. Seems to be working as intended.

EDIT: Scratch that. I see 8.5 does select tracks when you Ctrl+A with focus on a bus. The behavior changed in X1. I think this was a necessary side-effect of implementing the oft-requested feature that the focus highlight move to the bus pane when selecting a bus. So I would still say it's working as intended, and not really a problem so long as you're aware of the change.

The Edit > Select > All command selects everything in all open views. Any action affects all selected objects.
I think this is what your looking for.
Only the open windows will be selected.(The window you are working in.)

That was the first thing I checked - same result as Ctrl+A.

We'll see what the bakers say. It would be nice to have an ini file option instead of being forced to accept work flow changes.

I think the real issue is should the tracks be in the same windows as the buses, or should there be an option for this. Otherwise by design.

I would expect though to be able to do CTRL A on both the buses and track windows and for them both to persist once I change from one window to another (so I would have to do CTRL + A twice), as I can CTRL + A the tracks windows, and then selectively add buses at the moment (so not consistent).

I experienced that last night. I pressed Select A as I always do and nothing became selected.

I found something that did work. I clicked on any track to make it selected, then pressed Select A and the Select All function worked as usual.

I agree something is tweaked in that regard in X3, never had an issue with it before. But the method I just mentioned works fine and I've been able to proceed just fine.

I also usually double click a track or CTRL-A to select all tracks and clips when working on clips for bounce and the track pane is active. This time I had to tweak one of the busses for bounce to track and got an error telling me there was nothing selected. Kind of irritating when I hit CTRL-A to select all and expected that to work since it used to.

I have not really heard any argument to keep this behavior yet.

I've been letting this thread take its course without further input because it really doesn't seem worth the attention being lavished on it. But I have to say it seems a little odd that anyone should be so inconvenienced by a change in "workflow" that is apparently so rarely used that it wasn't noticed during the first two years after the change.

One "argument" for keeping the current functionality:

Being able to select all buses without selecting tracks allows you to use quick-grouping to do things like reset all panning to center, insert a send on all buses to (maybe after deselecting Master) to another hardware output, etc.

I have no doubt there are users out there that are taking advantage of the ability to select all buses or all tracks separately, and would be taken aback if it changed. And I wouldn't be surprised to find there are more in that boat than there are users who want to go back to pre-X1 functionality - if they care at all.

just because I post something does not mean I am 'so inconvenienced'.

I am not above changing my workflow. I have to with the 'X' series.

I would just like to understand why this is a good thing for some. If you fault me for that, oh well. I am just discussing it. sorry...

I think what irks some people is you often use thread titles that automatically assume something is a bug without investigating why the program responds the way it does. If a program works as intended but simply doesn't follow a particular workflow you like, it is not a bug and does not need a bug report filed. It is a feature request.

My characterization might have been a little exaggerated. Sorry for that. It just seems this is one of those cases where shrugging your shoulders and adapting to the new world order would be a lot less painful than pursuing a change that isn't likely to happen any time soon if ever. If the Bakers come back and say it's unintended AND actually fix it any time in the next 2 years, I'll eat my hat.

When I encounter something this minor that's pretty clearly WAD, and just different than it used to be, I just adapt to it on the spot and move on, even if it's not my preference. Unless it's something that's going to cost me significant time and effort to continue working around, I'm not going to waste my and the Bakers time looking at it. There are so many bigger fish to fry...

And, yes, I see the irony in my continuing contributions to this thread.

Just my $.02. No harm, no foul, I hope.

    Cheers,

@Dave, np, as long as we can be civil about it. :-D

@Craig, Then let the bakers feedback to me and I will report their findings. If it will be a feature request, so be it. At least that will get me an official answer and I will move on.

Yeah, for what it's worth, I think it's a weird design, with no immediately obvious particular uses. Trips me up all the time, as often the last thing I do before an export is adjust master bus fades. Then I go to Select All ready for exporting, and I select the buses, because that's where the focus is.

Like Brundlefly, I don't let it ruin my day or anything. Still, I don't really understand why it is how it is.

Thinking more about this while I am working with some track bouncing, selecting the TRACK\* option in the dropdown should set focus on the tracks since that is what is being processed or desired to be processed. The timeline is already set by the CTRL-A if the buss pane was the prior focus. Just thinking out loud here...
