[CWBRN-57066] Paste Special ignores Destination Track setting since 2016.08

As far as I can tell, the Paste Special function in SONAR Platinum 2016.10 currently seems to ignore the Destination > Starting Track setting.

When copying a clip and trying to paste a number of repetitions onto the same track using the Paste Special dialog, I set the Destination > Starting Track to be the same as the source track. However, if I have another track in focus, SONAR will paste the result onto the in-focus track instead. The Destination > Starting Track setting seems to be overruled.

Out of curiosity, I started up SONAR X3e Producer and did the exact same thing. I copied a clip from one track and attempted to paste a number of repetitions onto the same track using the Destination > Starting Track drop-down. And everything worked as I would expect with the repetitions neatly stacked up on the specified destination track.

Edit: Updated the title with Problem Report identity and time of introduction.

I was able to confirm the behavior on my system.

    Steps to reproduce:
    1.  Start new project
    2.  Insert 2 tracks (Audio or MIDI)
    3.  Drag a groove clip from the browser onto Track 1.
    4.  Select the clip on Track 1 and select Edit > Copy (Ctrl-C)
    5.  Deselect Track 1 and click on Track 2 to change focus to Track 2.
    6.  Set the Now time to measure 6.
    7.  Select Edit > Paste special and set Repetitions field to 6 and the Destination Starting track field to Track 1.

    Expected results:
Six copies of the Track 1 Groove clip should be placed on Track 1 starting at measure 6.

    Actual results:
Six copies of the Track 1 Groove clip are placed on Track 2 starting at measure 6.

I rolled back several versions and found that Version 22.7.0 Build 41 was the last version that the Paste Special Destination Start track worked as expected.

I would recommend submitting a problem report.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for your confirmation, SquireBum. I have now filed a problem report and included your findings about the first failing version number.

I reported this back on 8/26.  Cakewalk is aware of the problem because Cakewalk responded as follows:

    "Hi Pete,
I was able to replicate this, I've logged it internally. Regressions get high-priority so hopefully we can get it addressed soon."

There have been three updates since then; not sure what "soon" means in this context.

    Just a friendly bump!

As far as I can see, this error - introduced in 2016.08 - is still present in 2017.07 ER. I've got no response from support. Moderately impressed.

Ripple editing will now perform multiple copy/pastes.
Have you tried it yet ?

I agree that ripple editing is a great feature, but that doesn’t remove the bug in Paste Special.

Ripple editing was implemented to replace the Paste special and Delete hole issues we had.

    Hi Lars,

This specific issue was already tagged and submitted to development. I went ahead and updated your problem report.

It looks like you just submitted a problem report, but there wasn't a direct contact with support. Problem Reporter put cases into our automated system, where we could then pull them up when brought to our attention. The automated system could see hundreds of reports a week, so it was almost impossible to see everything. This is part of the reason we've removed the problem reporter from public view and recommending users get in touch with support directly first.

This was the disclaimer on the form:
Filling out this form will not put you in direct contact with Product Support or a human of any kind. If you are seeking support for your Cakewalk product please see our support contact information page to get in touch with the right person who can assist you. Additionally, consider visiting our FAQ as well as product support pages first to ensure that what you are experiencing is not a configuration problem or setting that could easily be corrected.

    Best Regards,
    Seth

Seth, thanks for your reply. I had absolutely no idea that registering an error report in the Problem Reporter went unnoticed by support unless you took additional steps and also contacted support directly. Mea culpa, should have read the full disclaimer I suppose. However, being my first Cakewalk problem report in 25 years, I'm quite unfamiliar with the routines.

I had noticed that the Problem Reporter mysteriously had disappeared from my account's Support menu. Now I not only understand why, but also fully support the decision to remove it.

Looking forward to the Paste Special destination track issue being resolved in a not too distant future

    Hi Lars,

Thanks for understanding. I got some hopeful news about this late yesterday afternoon.

It's too late to take for 2017.07's final release, but look out for 2017.08.
