.CWP opens 8.0 not 8.5 - can't fix!!!!

I'm running XP with Sonar 8.31, 8.53, and X1a installed. I want my CWP files to open 8.5, since X1 is too buggy to use presently, yet I've tried all the usual tricks for fixing the CWP file association and I'm stumped.

I've gone to Folder Options/File Types and tried to fix it there. I've also tried right clicking on a CWP file and checked "always use selected program to open this type of file", then choose "browse", go to the 8.5 directory and choose SONARPDR.exe. It still opens 8.0.

I've even changed the file association for a CWP file to wordpad adn then changed it back to Sonar 8.5 and it still opens 8.0. I've also tried reinstalling the 8.53 patch, where you get to choose file associations. That didn't work either.

Anyone figure this mystery out yet?

Can you doubleclick on the SONAR 8.5 shortcut on your destop and open 8.5? If you can, just open 8.5, then browse to the .cwp you want to open (via the SONAR 8.5 Toolbar Menu: File/Open), and open it in 8.5 that way.

Another thing to try if you can open 8.5 or X1, open either one of those apps, then browse to the .cwp as described above and save it (with a new name) in 8.5 or X1. Then, try to open the new named project in 8.5 by opening 8.5 first, and then browsing to the new named .cwp to open it as explained above. Also try doubleclicking the newly named .cwp and see if it opens in 8.5.

I can open 8.5 and X1 just fine with the shortcuts and open any CWP by choosing File/Open. Occasionally when Sonar is closed I may want to double click on a CWP file and want it to open in 8.5. Even if it's a file started in 8.5 and worked on only in 8.5, it doesn't matter. Double clicking on a CWP file opens it in 8.0. Even if I have 8.5 open and 8.0 closed. If I double click on a CWP file it opens in 8.0. It's maddening.

Yeah, John, I thought of that, but that wont work on my end, as a .cwp I started with 8.5 still opens in 8.5 even if I choose X1 via the open with method. That still might work for him, but if it doesn't:

Here's how to get it to work: do what John says, but before you choose the SONARPDR.exe, you will have to rename it to something like SONARPDR85.

    That should do it.

So to sum it up: rightclick on the .cwp you want to open in 8.5, select properties, click on open with, browse to the SONAR 8.5 directory with the SONARPDR.exe, before you select it, rename it to SONARPDR85, then select it.

    Tell us how that goes?

I can do that fine, but the next time I click on a CWP it opens in 8.0.

Brilliant idea! I'm sure that will work. Except since I rarely use 8.0, I'll rename it's exe. I'm leary of that making the program unstable by renaming it, but since it's 8.0, I'll chance it and leave 8.5 in tact.

    Wow!

    We had the same day!

I have a folder on the desktop that contains a bunch of .cwt files that are associated with the "buggy one". If I associate them with the sonarpdr in the 8.5 folder it open with sonar.......6!

Before sonar x1 was installed cwt file would opens with sonar 8.  WT?!

    Tomorrow is another day.
    And Superbowl Sunday BTW!

             Bingo!

Thanks. As disturbing as it is that we have to rename the exe in order for Sonar to behave itself or maybe its windows, anyway it worked.

    Thanks.

    Hi bitman:

Windows should recognize that the SONARPDR files are of different size and remember to associate the correct one when one browses to the thing using "open with."

And Cakewalk could have chose to name the SONARPDR with specific names so a user or Windows can tell the difference among the different versions of SONAR (besides just a icon associated with the different SONARPDR.exe files.) Such as SONARPDRX1 or SONARPDR85 or something like that.

Anyway, glad to be of help. I tried this before I posted it. That's why I posted it. :)
