The point is this:

% of business focused on audio software:

Cakewalk: 100%
Roland: 8.8%

your thinking is flawed. Cakewalk will still be crearing software. There not going to make them create mixers.
cj

Yes, Cakewalk will still be creating software (hopefully), the point is that they now will be getting their marching orders from people who, when push comes to shove, have other and bigger priorities.
I have been in pretty much this exact situation before. I was an Application Engineer in one of Hewlett-Packard's smaller divisions. Hewlett-Packard made more money selling laser-jet cartridges than my entire division made selling all our products and services. But my story is the reverse of this one - my division got spun-off into Agilent Technologies. We were 1% of HP but were 20% of Agilent. As a result our division began to flourish, because we had more say over how our division was run, instead of being told what to do by the computer, printer, digital imaging folks that made up the bulk of HP.
Cakewalk has had up until now, 100% say over how their company was run, R&D money was spent, and how they promoted and supported their products. Now they are a small division in a much bigger company, and will have to do what the folks in Japan tell them to do. That is what I am saying and I don't believe my logic is flawed in this.
Cheers,
Bud

BTW...I agree 100% with your post.

If one has a product that works well for one's needs, why should one worry about why that company accepted money from another in order to continue to improve the product?

I think this is much ado about nothing at this point...Roland did not buy Cakewalk and they do not (at this time) own a controlling interest in Cakewalk...Perhaps we should all just wait around for awhile (and continue using our excellent software to make music) and see what the future holds in store...

I agree

I wish the Bakers all the best! I could not imagine the amount of hard work they do but it must be extremely hectic, I hope they ease off on the pressure to release Sonar.8 by 2008 because I really don't care if it's 6 months late and besides v8 sounds like something you drink so why not skip it till after xmas and call it Sonar.9. Ok yeah! I'm sure the Baker will continue business as usual to further develop outstanding enhancements to what is already a fantastic full feature, fully loaded, butt kicking piece of brilliant software that is excellent value.

Hey SF_Green.......
I was a Application Engineer for Tektronix for 20 years. Finally got sick of the "how are sales doing" conference every 3 months. That is the corporate mentality.
Anyway, I am amused at all of the people here who think there won't be any changes. What a hoot! Roland will look for cost savings.

First to go will probably be people who collect the money. Duplicate efforts, so bye bye accountants and billing!
Next will probably be the marketing staff(some of them). Again, duplication of effort. So, less marketing people who find ink supplies, design cover art etc.
After that is usually support staff. Note that support staff is always viewed as an expense. So,some people supporting the prduct such as sustaining engineers(the folks who put out 7.01, 7.02 updates ) will be axed.
We, the consumer, will not see much of this in the short term. Most of the faces we see will remain, except for one or two. IF there is more than that, look out!

It is unreasonalbe to assume that with new management that there will not be changes. What do you expect the new managers to do? Nothing? They will do their jobs: manage. That means changes. They will want to show their boss(Roland) that they are doing a super job. No manager could walk into a meeting and say "it's working great, so I just took a 3 month vactaion ". They ALL have plans.

Anyway a lot of stufff will go on behind the scenes. We will know a lot more in a year.

BTW, can anybody come up with a few aquisitions that actually helped a company? There must be some but I can't think of any.

If it wasn't for Capitalism none of the products we are using now would exist including SONAR 7.Does it really matter who's making the money as long as the consumer is satisfied?

I've seen a lot of negative responses to the aquisition but not one concrete example of why it's bad, just pure speculation.

Hello,

First I would like to direct you to this topic where there are 500+ posts and 15K+ views. You are re-hashing the subject - nothing new in your posts.

http://forum.cakewalk.com/tt.asp?forumid=5

Yes, Cakewalk will still be creating software (hopefully), the point is that they now will be getting their marching orders from people who, when push comes to shove, have other and bigger priorities.

I have been in pretty much this exact situation before.

I don't believe my logic is flawed in this

But my story...

For me, the biggest flaw in this type of argument (which has been made here by many) is that this discussion is NOT about you. It's about the Cakewalk Company's business combination with Roland. (It seems many who post here are more interested in testifying - "I, my, mine"). Your personal experience in your employment is not related to anything other than your personal life. It certainly does not give you any special insight that would make your discussion more valid than common speculative pub talk. But if one must discuss another member's personal experience, don't you think that is was a sound business move by HP to spin off your company? Don't you think that the brass at HP realized they couldn't devote the necessary resources to your employer so they sold it to a smaller "bigger company" that did have those resources? That shows me that HP makes sound management decisions. Yet you paint HP's actions as negative. Which is another flaw in this type of discussion - the negativity and predictions of doom and gloom. .

No matter what happens in the future with Cakewalk/Roland my version of 5.2PE will remain unchanged and the same forever and ever. The worst case scenario going forward is that I have a studio capable of 50+ tracks laden with heavy plugs and maybe as much as 100 tracks with judicious bouncing and freezing. No one is forcing you to use or continue to use the product.

If it happens, it happens and there's nothing your pronouncements or "predictions" will change. Your posts are only descriptions of things that have happened to you and idle guessing, you haven't predicted anything. The only relationship that Sonar users enjoy is that of software customer. We are not the company's partners, friends, special colleagues or business confidants.

So use and enjoy your software and DAW rig for what it can do today not what it might be able to do tomorrow.

The point is this:

Cakewalk: 100%
Roland: 8.8%

You are disproving your own point. These figures demonstrate why they bought Cakewalk - because they were not a software company. Cakewalk will still be a 100% software company.

I'm pretty much an anti capitalist, however your statement is a true one.
I've given this some thought and two major companies come to mind which have a long history of buying/merging/investing in etc smaller companies, then milking them dry and in effect destroying them, IBM and Microsoft.

Of course this happens all the time, but IBM and Microsoft wrote the book on it and have been doing it for decades.

I am skeptical, however I do think this deal might be a good thing for us.

Maybe Roland will come out with a mid priced console, complete with flat screen, running Sonar?
That would be nice :)

Doesn't sound like the end of the world to me.

"We're announcing an expansion of our strategic relationship with Roland. This is the natural progression of a relationship that goes back more than a decade. In 1995 Roland began distributing Cakewalk products in Japan. In 2003 Roland invested in Cakewalk to help fund the development and marketing of joint products. At that time they also started distributing our products in many markets outside the US. Now in 2008, Roland is increasing their investment in Cakewalk, and together we are committed to creating a series of impressive software/hardware joint products.

Although Roland now owns a bigger share of Cakewalk, they didn't acquire the whole company. Cakewalk is not becoming a "division" of Roland. On the contrary, we remain committed to developing stand-alone software, as well as hardware/software products. We're updating our logo today, to prepare you for seeing it on some very exciting joint products in the months and years ahead. Cakewalk knows how to make outstanding software. Roland knows how to make outstanding hardware. Together we can make a big difference in the world of music and audio creation and production.

I deeply value the relationships that we have built with you over the years. Our mission is to provide you with the best software and hardware tools for music and audio production. That hasn't changed and we will continue to look to you, our customers, for your important feedback. Our discussion forum will remain open. You will have the same high level of technical support and customer service you have come to expect from Cakewalk. And furthermore, we will stay committed to our belief in open standards, collaboration with other leaders in our industry, and not using intrusive copy protection."

And I'll also mention your quote comes from the CEO and Founder of Cakewalk in the official release and in comments in one of the other threads.

I was thinking and Cakewalk wasn't made by Roland, so shouldn't the logo instead be: Cakewalk purchased by Roland or maybe Cakewalk engulfed by Roland or maybe even this No Longer Cakewalk, merging into Roland.

I believe the logo needs to express the situation clearly.

I was refering to the Cakewalk/Roland situation not buyouts in general.Any given situation will have it's pros and cons.My comment is directed towards the people who've already got it in their heads that this is a bad thing even though nothing has transpired.Maybe we should wait and see rather than speculate.Companies get bought out all the time the only time it gets brought to anyones attention is when it goes bad.

so Roland's already wealthy shareholders can make a little more money
Research shows that in the majority of acquisitions it is the shareholders of the larger, acquiring company that lose out ultimately. Those who do well financially are the professional advisers to both sides during the acquisition, and the shareholders of the acquired company. Of course, not all acquisitions follow this pattern ...

And as far as I can tell, Roland PAID for shares of TTS.
I have yet to find any information to suggest the shares were purchased from TTS. IMHO it is far more plausible the shares were purchased from third party investors.

I like the idea too...

I own a (grey) 707 as well as a GM70 controller (which I really don't use anymore in favor of my Axon) and a slew of Roland synths/fx... I've always liked them except for their' tendency to drop gear/support for....

I hope they don't do that to the Cakewalk stuff....

RE: Cakewalk By Roland - It Has Begun!!! 2008/01/27 14:38:12 (permalink)

thanks Bermuda. When I pointed out the histrionics brought on by all the misinformation I was sniped at.

And I'll also mention your quote comes from the CEO and Founder of Cakewalk in the official release and in comments in one of the other threads.

do people ever read before they post?

This is because you said that the CEO and Founder said that Roland bought a 25% share.
ORIGINAL: mark s

according to the founder of Cakewalk/TTS we are told Roland would ultimately have about 25% share. I've read this repeated more than once.

I have not read this anywhere other than in your post. Where did you get this information? Another user in that thread also asked you for a source which you failed to supply. Please provide a source. If you can't, then it seems to me that YOU are the one spreading the misinformation.
