Cakewalk Synthesizers: From Presets to Power User--Second Edition Published

I am pleased to announce that the second edition of Cakewalk Synthesizers: From Presets to Power User has now been released into the wild.  You can read more about the book and check out the video introduction here: http://noisesculpture.com/csfptpu.html.

The second edition of the book covers: Triangle II, PSYN II, Pentagon I, Z3TA+, Session Drummer 2 and Session Drummer 3, Dimension LE and Dimension Pro, Rapture LE and Rapture, and Beatscape.

If you've got the current edition of the book, then in the new edition you will find four new synthesizers: Beatscape, Session Drummer 3, Rapture LE, and Dimension LE.  You will also find significant updates to the material relating to three synthesizers which are featured in the current edition: Z3TA+, Dimension Pro, and Rapture.  In addition, there is a revised and expanded section dedicated to the SFZ format and undocumented features in the synthesizers are also highlighted.  There are also many other minor changes.

The book is, of course, great, and you should, of course, order your copy today .  However, let me tell you about the free stuff that is also available.

There is a large download to accompany the book.  The download is available from: http://noisesculpture.com/cakewalk-downloads.html and includes an additional 16 chapters, running to 255 pages.  These chapters cover: sfz and sfz+, Cyclone, RXP, DropZone, Square I, DreamStation, Roland GrooveSynth, and TTS-1.  The download package also includes sound design master classes from several leading synthesizer programmers as well as all of the patches/sounds/SFZ files referenced in the book.

Significantly, and unlike the package that was made available with the previous edition, this download is also intended for people who may not have bought the book, so for instance, if you've recently got hold of Square I or sfz+, then you should get hold of the download today.  As a second change, this download package is redistributable, so you may send it to your friends, post it on a website, add it to a torrent, include it on a CD/DVD on a magazine cover, and so on.

The reason that there has been a second edition of Cakewalk Synthesizers is that the first edition was a success. The first edition was a success because people bought it, talked about it, and recommended it to their friends. I would like to thank all of you, individually, for your help and the part you played in making the first edition a success.

The book is available in most locations already.  Where it isn't available, the books are currently being shipped to the stockists and should arrive shortly.  In any case, you should be able to pre-order.

I hope you will check out the book today.

As far as I'm aware, a downloadable edition (of the main book) is not expected.  However, I guess it might be made available through Safari Books in due course, but that would be a decision for the publisher and is not something I can control.  Equally, the publisher could decide to make the book available for the Kindle (and other ebook readers such as the nook or the Sony Reader), but I don't think there are any plans for this at the moment.

    All the best

I recently purchased this from Amazon and I've worked through the first couple of chapters. I'm finding it very informative and enjoyable ... I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about using the Cakewalk synths.

I just ordered your book from Amazon. Looking forward to reading it.

Someday I hope to purchase Spectrasonics products Omnisphere, Trillian and Stylus RMX. Any chance you will be writing a book about that group of products?

This is a great book. I have 1st edition and will probably buy second edition for the updated and bonus content. Although I've moved from Sonar to Cubase, I can still use Triangle and Square, which are free VSTs. However I am so committed to this book as a training resource that I would be willing to re-buy Pentagon as a VST (it came bundled with one of my version of Sonar but of course only as a DXi). Then I own Rapture and DimPro which both work fine with Cubase as VSTs.

A great synthesizer learning book. Starts with the basics. And as many have found out - these cute little free synths that none of us pay any attention to when we install the massive bloat of a Sonar package actually sound pretty darn good!

Ditto, these synths are in need of a killer instructional set! Trilian is really deep (no pun intended, ha!) and I can't even imagine what Omnisphere is capable of.

I'm a newcomer to DAWs in general and Sonar in particular. I initially felt confused and bewildered by all the controls on a cakewalk soft synth. However, since I started working through this book, I have felt a lot happier about the whole synthesizer subject.

It is well written & thorough, progressing in easily digestible stages. It is entirely suitable for a beginner. Great work Simon

That "someday" came shortly after I made this post. I sold some old gear, got a good price from ADK and asked them to load it on my newly ordered computer. I'm sure the presets will satisfy me for a long while but it would be great to have a Spectrasonics synth book like the excellent Cakewalk synth book I just received from Amazon . Please consider writing a book on Omnisphere, Trillian and Stylus RMX, covering programing and using them separately and together.
