Cakewalk TTS-1: What is a TTS-1 Output track for?

When I first started using Sonar X3 (now using Artist), I created a template for all my future projects. This template was to include (for starters): three Cakewalk SoundCenter tracks, three Cakewalk TTS-1 tracks, and one SessionDrummer track. On top of that, I created an extra track for TTS-1 Output.

I abandoned music composition for quite a few months in focus on other hobbies. Now that I've returned to it, I'm drawing a huge blank. At the time, I did the necessary research and educated myself on why to create a TTS-1 Output track. But now, strangely, I don't remember why I created that track for my template or how. And I'm not able to refresh my memory with a Google search on "how TTS-1 works". So now, as awkward as it is, I'm having an "I don't know why I did that moment", and I have to ask my fellow musicians to help me out.

I remember vaguely that the Output track consolidates my TTS-1 tracks into one channel, or something like that. But still, I can't remember why I created that track.
What are the benefits/reasons for creating a TTS-1 Output track? I'm trying to refresh my memory to determine whether I need it or not.

Any insight and re-education is appreciated! Thanks.

All Software synths consist of an input MIDI track for the MIDI data and an output Audio Track to enable hearing and recording that MIDI data as Audio.

SONAR can display Software synths as either a Simple instrument track (SIT) or in a more conventional way as two tracks one MIDI input and one Audio out.  These can be group in a folder.

Are you using a SIT for your TTS-1 or the more conventional two track arrangement.

Yes I am ware that TTS-1 is a multitimbral instrument.

I loved TTS-1 and I have work with it for a long time.  Recently I tried to use it again but, it never work with SONAR X3e.  I use the 88.2 sample rate and somebody told me that was the reason.  I read somewhere else  that it was possible to bridge it with the 64 thing because it's a 32 bit affair.  Everything's mooving so fast, by the time we are getting Ok with a set up, suddenly a part goes away and we got to find out again the way to get on.  Good luck Grundberg and if anybody knows if the TTS-1 can still work, please take a few minute to give the way to go...

TTS-1 is a DXi Muzock no 32 bit DXi works in 64 bit SONAR not without some fiddling.  The version supplied with SONAR is 64 bit.

TTS-1 ships as a 32bit and 64bit DXi. It does not work at 88.2K, never has. This is documented in the Readme.rtf and Readme.txt in older versions of SONAR. It can work at 96K but requires enabling the  "Light Load Mode" setting in TTS-1 system options every session for every instance of TTS-1.

WRT the OP, look at the instrument assignments for TTS-1 in the template. To review the output assignments in TTS-1:
  • open the TTS-1 UI
  • click on the SYSTEM button on the right side of the TTS-1 UI to open System Settings dialog
  • click on the OPTION button on the System Settings dialog
  • look at the Output Assign tab

Is it possible that you were using it to playback some midi files that you downloaded? TTS-1 is ideal for that.

I agree. TTS-1 is Cakewalk's tool for General Midi.

I think Wookiee explained the track situation well.  If I understand the OP question, assuming there are 3 TTS-1 simple instrument tracks, there really wouldn't need to be an 'extra' audio output track.

But.  If what you had instead was three MIDI source tracks for TTS-1, then you would need at least one audio track for output from TTS-1.  A way to set this up would be to insert 3 MIDI tracks, then insert one instrument track with 'First Synth Audio Output Only'.  No simple instrument track, no MIDI source.  Then route your MIDI source tracks as needed to MIDI channels in TTS-1, for example ch1, ch2, ch3.

Then when you play TTS-1 you will hear the output from TTS-1 instrument channels 1, 2, 3 all together on the audio track.

Too bad TTS-1 is not a VST.  There are very few multi-timbral General MIDI plugins around.  It is quite useful.

One thing I did discover recently about Reaper, is that it can use DX and DXi plugins.  So in that case, you are not completely locked to Sonar as far as DXi plugins go.

I think there was another thread a while back with a technique for using a VST wrapper of some sort with DXi plugins that will make them portable, but I don't have a link handy.

Not the case, actually. I believe I had placed the Output track there as a convenience, not a necessity. I think I had picked it up from someone that it was beneficial to have an Output track to correspond to/consolidate all my TTS-1 instrument tracks, but I simply don't remember what the solid reason was, or if it would even apply to my style...

Otherwise, I'd do away with it and just work with all my TTS-1 tracks individually.

I find it very useful also for auditioning or creating midi sequences. I then use VST's if all is well with TTS-1.
I remember the stand alone,Roland Hypercanvas, which seems to be where TTS-1 came from originally.

Very useful for me.............

Re: Cakewalk TTS-1: What is a TTS-1 Output track for? 2018/04/05 00:14:07 (permalink)
Thank you all for your insightful input. I'm having trouble jogging my memory as to why I placed a TTS-1 Output track into my template, but I think it has something to do with the instructions I read regarding the design of the synths. For example, I read that every Sound Center synth track must have its own instance, but 16 TTS-1 tracks can go to one Output...or something of that nature.

Although your comments are helpful and fairly understood, would you mind dumbing it down a bit for me? I just need to know -- at face value, for a newbie, so to speak -- is it necessary to have an Output track to represent my TTS-1 tracks, or is it okay for them to all stand alone? What are the benefits and do I need it?

Thanks again! :)

Open a new empty project and insert TTS-1.  Select options 'MIDI Source' and 'All Synth Audio Outputs: Stereo".

This will insert 4 stereo audio tracks and one MIDI track, along with the TTS-1 synth.

If you click on the TTS-1 button 'System', then 'Options', you will see that you can route any of the 16 instrument slots in TTS-1 to any one of the four audio outputs.

Up to you.  Have a look around...
