Cakewalk and Edirol PCR-50 Controller

Hey folks I am not new to the industry but I am just now trying to get started up again. Way back when I used Cakewalk 7.0 Recently I found a Edirol PCR-50 Controller for $15 but it only came with USB, no power supply. I also have a USB midi in/out cable if I need that as well. I already downloaded and installed the PCR_Win7drv_64 driver. Here is my PC Specs Dell Laptop XPS15 i7 2Ghz Windows 7 SP1 64Bit 4GB RAM I am not sure which software I should start out with or if even my Laptop can handle the job. At the moment all I can afford to do is hook up this controller and hope to find an affordable version of Cakewalk maybe in the $40 or less price range for starters. I am also interested in learning more about the top version Cakewalk so when I get some money maybe I can upgrade. Anything that can help me get started with this controller and a software would be great. Thanks folks Dave

    Welcome,Dave.
I would suggest Music Creator 6 for your software. It is the entry level for Cakewalk, but quite capable, and some users have found that MC is all they really need.
Also, the MC forum is pretty friendly.
As far as the laptop goes, you may have some success with the onboard sound, using WASAPI, but your best bet is to get a dedicated sound card/interface. These can be had for $100-200.
Near real-time latency is crucial with your controller and soft synths, and your sound card is at the heart of that.
Since you don't have a power supply, the USB connection is a must with the PCR-50.  A USB/MIDI cable would do you no good.
Things have changed a lot since CW7, so don't be afraid to ask any questions, however basic they may be.

Thanks for reply I appreciate it. I tried using Anvil (Free download) as a test. I assigned the "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" to "Midi Out Port" and ran Test Midi Connections/Start to ensure the midi was working and it was. I heard the sounds playing but the controller is not playing the GS Wavetable sounds whether GM1 or GM2. "Midi In" is set to the Edirol "PCR-2 Midi Out" or something like that. Unfortunatley I am replying at a WiFi Cafe and cannot verify the exact term used. I said all that to say, your suggestions sounds great to get the "Music Creator 6" but I am wondering if the reason I don't get any sound is because I am using USB instead of the power supply. I read somewhere in the Edirol manual that usb may not work with some pcs. Would love to buy Music Creator 6 but need to be sure that the Edirol is working first. Also, I am not clear on the use of WASAPI. Can't I just use my headphones to monitor? I am not trying to connect any external speakers just yet. I am getting vague answers when I google. If I absolutely need it how do access it and set it up? Thanks again

    Welcome to the forum.
What sounds did you hear and how did you hear them? If it's MIDI, it would be the MS GS Wavetable synth playing them. Or do you mean it's not playing the sounds you want them to play?

On the back of the Edirol where the AC adapter plugs in, there may be some symbols denoting the voltage and polarity required for the adapter, or it is in the manual. Go to the local Radio Shack or other electronics store and get an AC adapter with those specifications if you think the USB power isn't enough or is malfunctioning.

It was the Anvil Studio software where I performed the test and it went ok. When I play the Edirol Controller I hear no sound at all from the GS Wavetable. I am assuming then it is the power supply that I need. Thanks for your help and the welcome folks

According to this and this (I just googled "power adapter for pcr-50"), the required voltage is 9V.

Power supplies are normally an optional extra and not included with the keyboard by defaUlt.  Roland charges $30 or more for a power supply, but a cheap generic one costing under $15 will work just fine.

Welcome to the forum. A PCR-50 for $15??? Good buy.  When I bought mine used, it didn't act right with using just the USB for power. Once I put an external power supply on, everything started working to specs.  I can pull the external power and switch to USB and it works.  Maybe it just needed the additional current supplied by the external.
