Cakewalk and its "Broken Windows"

Broken Window Theory

<Some quotes and / or summaries>

"Consider a building with a few broken windows.
If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows."

"Consider a sidewalk. Some litter accumulates. Soon, more litter accumulates.
Eventually, people even start leaving bags of trash from take-out restaurants there or breaking into cars."

"Mere perception of disorder - things seemingly irrelevant - precipitates a negative feedback loop that can result in disorder"

I believe the "broken windows" theory can be apply to Cakewalk at the moment.
  • First, through this 'forum'.
  • Secondly, through their code / app.

"Fix each one [a.k.a. window] as soon as it is discovered.
If there is insufficient time to fix it properly, then board it up."

"Neglect accelerates the rot faster than any other factor"

"Programming is insanely detail oriented, and perhaps this is why:
if you're not on top of the details, the perception is that things are out of control,
and it's only a matter of time before your project spins out of control. "

    What a wonderfully perceptive view.

    polish is what's lacking.

It's like let's get it to 90% and then start to go back and fix it up. No time left have to get it out the door.

I've never looked more closely at SONAR as I have with X1 and the lack of polish on so many aeas goes back so far I'd be embarraswed if this was my work output.

usually I've been saying - sorry for being so blunt - but not anymore - no-ones saying to me look SONAR isn't quite there yet so we'll charge an according percentage of completion as the price. No I pay the Cakewalk set price for whatever is my version entitlement based on whether I update every year (in my case), 2nd year or whenever.

I ask you just go to the About screen of SONAR any version back to 8. Notice anything about it. the last line of text has a line through it. Its just sloppy coding and very very poor work. A little thing you say, pedantic am I, doesn't affect the program in any way.

Perhaps you're right - what it tells me is that close enough is good enough. It tells me there's an ethos at Cakewalk that allows people to get away with the unpolished work.

TO me it typifies the deep issue that is evidenced by the long standing bugs and at this rate the bug inventory is just going to get bigger and bigger.

This kind of committment to mediocrity is on show eveywhere in Cakewalk from programming to QA and customer service. the inreturned emails the ignored customer service requests and the constant promises when you finally do get a listening ear. but the problems aren't ever solved because next year it happens all over again.

I mean after having initally ordered S8.5 on Nov 1st with free upgrde to X1 (I've received the package now) I still don't have a paid order on the system and while my registration details are there for X1 I don't have a real paid for order showing in my history. Does it matter? Is it small? Who cares. if that was all I wouldn't but its just so mediocre. Apparent "hiccups because Cakewallk is such a small company".

I've had contact with no less than 3 Cakewalk reps during this time (now 2 months+) without complete resolution and I was given info that scares the hell out of me about what's going on inside. This annual bun fight of problems just continues year after year after year.
I have an hiatus till the end of January - a luxury situation that I planned to use to get upto speed on X1 but every day is 2 steps forward 3 steps back then a victory then a loss then another loss and so it goes. things disappear - everything from small graphic elements to whole things like the control bar, VST's and on and on.

It must be my system. Hang on I can go back to 8.3 or 8.5 in either 32 or 64 bit on this system and all works fine excepting the old bugs that are now like old friends we have come to expect every version.

I was reminded the other day that its usually me who says "Well its working fine on my system" with the usual "give us your spec and we'll help you fix it up", reply.

But I'm out of here now - I officially am using the rest of my  hiatus to do some constructive work in the studio ready to go in February with SONAR 8.5.3 with the X1 box (nice as it is) taking a unique pride of place along with all my other SONAR software packages as the only I've decided to not use.

I n 4 months when the last of the patches is released I might revisit X1 and see what the feedback is like then.

    ciao

Thanks for your comments Mike (mudgel).
