It's unbelievable that Cakewalk continues to charge customers for an MP3 encoder even after that customer pays $400+ for a piece of software (Sonar 8 producer edition, in this case).

If I recall correctly the MP3 encoder is licensed seperately to Cakewalk and is not allowed to be included in the Sonar Package.

Cakewalk apparently continues to remain absolutely clueless about how to treat customers with dignity. We're all just little squirrels running around the Cakewalk Cages, folks. Tomorrow we'll have to jump through yet more hoops and waste yet more time to perform some basic software function.

Come on Mike, that's simply not true. Cakewalk does make service delivery mistakes, but almost every time they owe up to them and attempt to fix them.

I found out what i dont know, before saying something is a RIP. Thats just insane to make a judgement without knowing what you dont know

Wasn't really taking issue with you CJ...just pitching for a little civility. Insane judgments aside, reacting with personally derogatory remarks toward any poster is just unnecessary. Now I'm not implying you do that, but it does happen on all forums with annoying frequency.

Personally, I think it should be free (well, included in the price actually) as well.
In fact, I think they should have a "Media Encoder" that exports in a variety of current "mobile" file formats.

I can live without it, and just use iTunes or something for that, but given the amazing current range of possible formats, particularly for mobile devices, or for embedding in flash objects, etc... it seems an oversight at this point.

For very little money, they could license the codecs, like many other DAWs do, and code an encoder.
To me, it's way past just the MP3 encoder at this point. Times have changed.

No big deal...
Just sayin',

"Rip off" ? No ... I would not go that far. I would just say that this is a ubiquitous need and should be a standard part of any and all audio programs that export sound files.

With regard to the $5 per license, you have to bear in mind that you also have the administration of the encoders, and while the costs are relatively low, it is a standard business model to include a profit not only to cover costs , but also to include ..... shock ...... horror ....... profit. There may also be exchange rate variations to take into account as well, all of this could quite easily reach 3-4 times the actually cost of the license.

You pay for this once, whereas other people think it should be thrown in free, even if this did cost Cakewalk $10 to include that with each sale, and they have 1000 sales worldwide, thats $10,000 cost over that perio. Research to see how much actual profit that Cakewalk make, and you will find that this is a sizable chunk of money for them.

Rather than charge you for it they give you the opportunity to buy it once for all the products (actually saving you money), they also give you the opportunity (and even tell you how) to do it for free. Either of which is preferable to them bundling it with everything, and the consumer having to pay for it with every disk sold.

Also Im curious to know what other professional audio software includes it, I certainly know that Cubase Essential and Cubase Studio do not include it. I wonder if Pro Tools has an mp3 encoder?

Really not a big deal since there's free ones that can be configured to use directly in Sonar's Export Audio dialog boxes. I paid for the unlock program so I'm personally not sure how to do this. Though I know Papa???? supplied an in depth step by step procedure recently. Do a search for it...

I knew it wasnt aimed at me, as you can see my half hearted response.
I would like to add something and not at you, just in general.. When a poster starts off as arrogant, then the responses will follow suit. If he would of just asked, why doesnt cake come with an MP3 or something, he would of got a civil answer from many of us. When he talked about being ripped, then he just didnt do his homework before assuming such a farce. WOW, i justsaid Farce...

It's not the $19. I'd gladly pay an extra $19 for Sonar if it just included the MP3 encoder. It's the TIME wasted dealing with Cakewalk's lousy shopping cart system, lousy software delivery system, multiple layers of passwords, save files, running the encoder and then finding out it doesn't even work on x64 systems anyway!

Cakewalk, get a clue! MP3 should just be part of the package. What are you gonna do next, charge us for the RECORD button? Charge us for exporting WAV files? Charge us for every virtual effect?

Ridiculous. MP3 is part of music production today. Just put it in the software from the get-go. Don't make your customers jump through all these hoops, wasting their time trying to activate your silly MP3 encoder.

Cakewalk apparently continues to remain absolutely clueless about how to treat customers with dignity. We're all just little squirrels running around the Cakewalk Cages, folks. Tomorrow we'll have to jump through yet more hoops and waste yet more time to perform some basic software function.

OK how many here believe that CW is ripping us off in this, class, raise your hands? That was the tenor of the OP's post after all.

Nope. Not at all.

I paid my $19 when I bought Project 5 about 4 years ago... and appreciate having the security of something that works without me having to spend a lot of time fidgeting with it.

In some ways, it's a convenience thing: I already owned Adobe Audition, which includes the mp3 encoder/decoder, so I didn't really need the CW one. This way, I needn't switch apps to make an mp3.

Cheers,

Russ

Unfortunately it seems that it will not work with Sonar version 4.

Nor any later version of Sonar... :( Pity, because I used it with Home Studio and it's very, very good.

Actually, I'm in the "Don't Include" camp. Why should we be paying an extra $20 on EVERY upgrade of SONAR just to get the same encoder when you have the opportunity to pay for it once and be done with it. The demo encoder doesn't overwrite the one you bought in whatever version we got it with. But once you figure out LAME, it works really well and isn't so difficult to add. You just have to find the right thread.

I agree. MP3 export should be automatically included in Sonar. This is 2009, not the 90's.

Some people are sticklers for netiquette, and looking up frequently asked questions is part of that. Personally I have no problems with it, you should see how often the justification question comes up on the P5 forum.

In reply to BeachBum, other than its 2009, give me a good reason why I should pay about $100 for all the versions of my software to include mp3 as standard. Ill give a few examples of Sonars competition

Protools -- purchased upgrade
http://archive.digidesign.com/download/mp3/ ($20)

Logic 8 - purchased upgrade (as far as I can tell with a quick look on the web)

Cubase Studio 4 -purchased upgrade
Cubase Essentials 4 - purchased upgrade
Cubase 4 - included, but has a price much higher than Sonar Producer (and certainly doesnt have a plugin package with it that even compares)

So Im quite curious as to why a professional program "needs" to have mp3 to be up to date, it seems very few of the competitors are.

I know a few consumer grade programs do come with mp3 export as standard but as I said these are "consumer" programs, and not professional applications, even then only about half give mp3 export.

Im also curious as well why someone actually "needs" mp3, so if someone could answer that as well.

EDIT- also as to why your OMF question recieved few replies, is that there are only a minority of users that would use OMF, those that do are less likely to be using the forums and more likely to be working.

I've gotta agree with this completely, Lite. I've been a Cake user for many years and because I no longer have the code or the disc to some version that entitles me to have the encoder for free, I have to purchase another. To me, it's principal...period. I think ANY continued user of Sonar after 2 freaking versions should be entitled to an mp3 encoder that is built into it. I'll even go as far to say buying 3 versions if that helps any. I had a friend of mine just purchase Sonar 8. He's never had Sonar in his life. He was extremely angry there wasn't an encoder in his nearly $500.00 version of S8 or whatever he paid for the full version. I too feel a bit ripped off that I use another application to do my mp3 encoding. To be honest, I've been with Cake since version 3 on floppy disks....they've made enough money off me to where an additional $20 for an encoder insults my intelligence, seriously. And, I cannot blame one newbie for coming on here and feeling the same. Beat to death topic or not, it sucks. Charge the $20 more for the thing if need be. They make us go through all this additional BS with upgrades and codes to older version to get the upgrade price, surely they can tell we already paid for an encoer so we don't have to pay again in future versions, correct?

And I also agree with some of the responses. But I can't blame the posters for being nasty, I blame the moderators for allowing them to make this board look bad at times. I don't like censored posts, but there are some things that need to be dealt with. Sometimes people don't have time to search through things....sometimes people aren't pc savvy. They see a forum, they ask a question and if they aren't upto the standards or certain people, they get annihilated. This is not a good representation of what this community is about, and it doesn't say much for the moderators or the company in which this site is for. Sorry but that's how I feel. If someone tells me to stop whining when I have what I feel is a legit complaint, I'm gonna go off the hook and I don't care if I get banned. In this case, just because some licensing fee is the culprit doesn't mean it still doesn't suck, ya know? This is the kind of thing that makes people steal. Ever see the cracked cake encoder in torrents? I have too and if I used cracks on my box, after spending $400 plus on a progie, you better believe I'd nab it. I've learned something as a very successful businessman with a world-wide client base other than my music endeavors....you eat anything under $50.00 when you need to. It is not worth losing a customer or a group of customers for anything less than $50.00...trust me when I tell you. If this is the case, you are charging too little for your services. :)

But as it has been clearly stated you would end up paying for it over and over if they included it and you buy new versions of sonar. It would never be "free" since they have to pay the royalty per disk. People would be more outraged when they found out that the cost was increased by something they may already have purchased. Cake can't win either way IMO.

So I vote for not including it since I already have a truly "free" one that works flawlessly.

So do you think you are not paying for the Pantheon reverb ever version? Maybe they should make that, and every other plugin that go from version to version available as a $20 addon.

Logic 8 - purchased upgrade (as far as I can tell with a quick look on the web)

Logic Pro 8 will export to mp3. It's an integrated feature, not a separate purchase.
Don't know about Express.

I never really use it, since I'm not a big fan of mp3 anyway, though.

RE: Cakewalk charging for MP3 encoder activation - what a rip! 2009/01/14 16:03:41 (permalink)
I like Sonar. But I too do not like to have to take the time to setup mp3 functionality in Sonar each time I setup a workstation. Just a small annoyance really. MP3s are just as relevant to our work as the *.wav extension. Regardless, I go about the steps to make it work in Sonar. But I have to say that one of my apps (Soundforge) that has this already for me to use from day 1, causes me to think more of them for that. I like having the normal tools I need ready to go.

One more thing. Some of us have been making music for years. I could give a rat's behind whether a poster is new to a software forum or has a million posts. I respect them all equally.

LOL....... I never had a c64. My first comp was an Amiga 500 which in true FBB fashion I had to pull to pieces to see how it worked. Then got an A1200 and even put a HD in it. 2.5" 20MB - hi-tech or what?

Dabbled in C for a while (for fun !! ) and then I was devastated when the Amiga technology got buried in the big Windoze conspiracy and been stuck with an inefficient OS ever since, although XP was a big improvement, shame it took MS so long to get to where Commodore were before squandering it. I even fired the old Amiga up a few years ago and it still amazed me how swift it was given the spec 20MB Hard drive 68030 chip and a whopping 16MB of memory.

*Eyes mist up recalling fond memories*.......

Ahhh yes, a fellow Amiga user.

Especially one that understands the the Windows conspiracy. While people were using their ms dos machines, we were using mice and GUI.

I did video and animation for 10 years with the Amiga 2000 and 4000. Video Toaster 4000. Window multimedia still has yet to catch up with Amiga Technology and the Operating system (workbench) never crashed !!!!!!

My first machine, amiga 2000, 1mb memory, no hd, added 16 meg accelerator and 105 mb hard disk (1600.00 usd) 68030 motorola.

Man, this brings a tear to my eye.

LONG LIVE THE MEMORIES OF THE AMIGA.

Yep when you think how old that technology is now, where would it be had it been developed at the same rate as Windows? The whole OS setup was fantastic, none of this GBs of rubbish that you have to install with Windoze. The secret to a lot of that was many of the librarys were in ROM nowadays in windoze there's a million and one dlls to be installed with every program. I fancy a lot of re-inventing the wheel goes on there.

What happenend to the Amiga technology? Last I heard Gateway had bought it, I kept hoping someone would see the light and we'd end up with fast, stable computers that ran in 24 mb of RAM and where a 1 GB hard drive would be enough to install the OS several times over, but I guess it's like a lot of things, best isn't always most successful unfortunately.

Another case of a new Cakewalk customer, getting his head torn off, due to the simple fact that he either did not know to do a search, or flat out did not want to do a search.

Oh, and I personally think it sucks that I have to pay 19.00 for a MP3 Converter also !

While I will admit, there are many helpful people here, there are also people here that should either not respond to posts, or seek anger management ! (you know who you are)

Sometimes the arrogance is ths forum greatly outweighs the helpfullness.

OK, those of you who think I was referring to you, start the mortor attack !

Bring it on boys.................................................. !

INNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMING !

Nice post !
