Cakewalk failing to scan for VST's on startup
I have got a problem with the fact that cakewalk does not scan for VST'S even when I have the option for it to sacn for then on start up, also in the settings the option to scan VST folders is not clickable what can be wrong here?

Yes I have the VST's from the program files selected however it still does not not me select "scan VST folders" & does not scan VST'S on start up.

Hi John, just out of interest, are you able to perform a manual scan from either Edit > Preferences > VST Settings or from the Utilities > Cakewalk Plugin Manager menus?

Good catch SH1. John, a lot of VSTs will install to one directory but the location of the actual .dll plug-in itself may be installed elsewhere - you can usually stipulate which folder these are added to. It's also often possible to copy the .dll's to another folder.

No I'm not able to do a manual scan & even with "scan VST'S on start up selected it does not do so. Yes I have folders to scan they are in my Program files.

Are you going into plug in manage from the menus on top or are you looking in preferences? i suggest going into plug in manager if you arent

Found this for an older version - I stress older version: If the VST options are not available, it means that SONAR did not complete the personalization process correctly. Try holding down the SHIFT key on your computer keyboard and while holding the key, start up SONAR. This will force it to re-personalize your files and that should clear up the problem. Make sure X1 is up-to-date too. That's been a cure apparently.

Yes that's worked in makeing Sonar scan for files on start-up thank you very much Strikinglyhandsome. However not all of my VST'S are displaying in the SYNTH drop down menu for me to select in Sonar even when they are showing in the VST scan folder menu. FOR EXAMPLE MY VST SCAN FOLDER IS SHOWING THIS 
But I'm unable to select any of the Native Instrument VST's such as FM8 & Massive

You need to check "re-scan failed plugins".

Just a shot in the dark here John, but do you use your own customised Plug-in Layout?
If so, you may need to add the synths to it (and remember to save) in Plug-in Manager.

Looking at the screen capture, it looks like the VST plugins folders aren't all correct.
ie: Omnisphere doesn't put the plugin dll in the install folder.
I think the issue is simply a matter of getting the right folder/location for all the plugin dlls
This problem points out just how important plugin organization/management is when using a 64Bit OS/DAW. If you just accept the default plugin install directory (for each of many plugins), you wind up with a tangled mess (dlls everywhere). Best to direct each install to your specific plugin directory/directories.

You would go away screaming "how could he let that happen"!  I have plugins all over the place. One of these days I will try to get these things into some sort of order.

Yes, you most definitely need to simplify your main Vst folders. And then when you install plug-ins you can place them in your new simplified folders. Don't forget, you can have sub-folders inside your main folders to keep everything neat and tidy. Any that you think are missing, you will have to go and look for them. I would address your main Vst folders structure now at the outset.
Sonar's 32Bit VST plugins get installed to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\VstPlugins
Sonar's 64Bit VST plugins get installed to
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\VstPlugins
Third-party 32Bit VST plugins get installed to
C:\Program Files (x86)\VstPlugins
Third-party 64Bit VST plugins get installed to
C:\Program Files\VstPlugins

Simple... and effective To make installs even more clear, you could name the folders like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\VstPlugins_32Bit C:\Program Files\VstPlugins_64Bit

Thanks for your tips guy's you've all been very helpful  I've created a separate folder for all my VST's so I can store them all in one place instead of having to search here there & everywhere for them.
