Cakewalk not responding
Why, when I select "staff view", does Cakewalk turn opaque, then Windows comes back with a message saying "Cakewalk not responding"? I can select piano roll or event view, but not staff view all of a sudden. I rebooted to no avail. I had this once before, but I have forgotten how I resolved it. I want to do a backup, but not until I fix this. Thanks

Fair chance that's a Windows problem. Any recent updates, etc? Check System Restore. It will show you any System Restore points it has created. Some are routine, but some are triggered by an event. Look for a recent event, and resore to that point, or slightly before it. More often than not, that will take care of sudden changes.

or it could be your soundcard driver problem. if Robert's suggestion doesn't work - list your soundcard and computer OS again to refresh our memory. and which driver mode are you using?

I'm using Windows Vista (cough, cough), a Tascam 122L and MME. This has been an on and off problem. I did check the latest updates, and there was a huge Itunes update, so I restored the old version. Now things seem to be okay. So far, so good, now I'll put the Itunes update back on. Thanks guys!

i don't remember this before - did we tell you to use MME driver mode or was that something you did on your own? MME is the worst driver mode to use - you should be using WDM or ASIO if you can. there should be good WDM orASIO drivers for the US122L.

I think someone recommended MME initially - but that was before I got the Tascam 122. I will check out the others - they do appear as options - any particular one you recommend? Thanks, A.

ASIO is a tad quicker than WDM. Yeah, when someone new starts out, they usually have only the onboard sound card, and MME is often necessary to get MC and the sound card talking. You should get very low latency with ASIO.

yes, overall ASIO is better because even if you have your onboard soundcard still active then it won't allow you to use it during recording (which you really shouldn't be doing) because ASIO allows only one soundcard at a time. choose ASIO, then make sure you close and restart MC before trying to use record or play again.

Amateur.... I believe the problem comes from Vista. Aside from getting the right drivers....which is important so that the program will be working as efficiently as possible with the "Victim aka (Vista)" operating system. The right drivers will cause less problems in the overall scheme of things cause they work better than the MME drivers. I get this same thing... "Cakewalk not responding" every once in a while too. I know it will occur, and since it is very unpredictable, I save my work frequently. It occurs most often when I try to do things quickly in succession. Usually if I take my time between clicks to let the software do it's thing before clicking something else, everything works perfectly. My advice...save your work often. Reboot and move on. I think Vista will end up being an operating system similar to ME.....one that everyone would like to forget.

K. Sigh. I tried to change the driver from MME to ASIO and it won't let me saying there's an "error in a parameter....". I've done everything Tech support suggests and what I could find in various forums, no luck. I tried downloading 2 different drivers, no luck. So I'm back to you guys for help, again!

do this: Thank you for contacting Cakewalk Technical Support. Please try the attached reset utility. If that alone fails, please go to your Windows Start Menu and click "Run". At the prompt, type or paste the following: %APPDATA%/CAKEWALK This will open a folder in Windows Explorer. Find the folder named "Music Creator 4". Right-click on it and choose "rename". Change the folder's name to the following: "Music Creator 4 backup" Launch Music Creator 4 again and allow it to recopy the application data. Before you launch MC4. Please download this driver mode utility. http://www.cakewalk.com/support/sonar/drivermode.zip You can use it to launch SONAR in a different driver mode such as ASIO.

well, I followed the Cakewlak instructions, and my computer really did not like it! Good thing I did a full backup last night, as I had to do a full restore tonight. Think I'll stick with MME for now.........................I'm going to put a bullet through its hard drive next time....................

I changed the name of the program to Music Creator 4 backup and changed the drivers to Asio. Then Cakewalk wouldn't recognize the Tascam 122L, and I couldn't select it. So then I dedecided to reboot the computer. So I did that, and then I couldn't open Cakealk at all. Then I tried changing the nem back, and it still wouldn't open. So then I did a partial "restor" on the Cakewalk program, after which I could open it, but half the files were missing. So I did a full "restore" and everything's working again. I think it's Vista, stuff that's supposed to work sometimes does, and other times you get a big surprise. Next computer will be a Mac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah - I've heard really bad stories about vista. I'm not "upgrading" to vista until I absolutely have to. let us know how things continue to work (or not!)
