Mod Bod I just noticed that the top bar says Samplitude Pro X on the screen capture of the Sequoia mixer view. I own Samplitude Pro X and it looks more like this... Any of the horizontal sections can be expanded or collapsed. The mixer view is the best in the business, IMHO. Sequoia is the same as that, Dave. I'm not running a project or anything, but it's definitely pretty cool to see everything like this. I really dig the layout. I'm still in love with this though and can't believe this is Reaper! If Sonar gets that send/console view thing to where we don't have the wasted space, I think that will be quite awesome. Remember Sonar 5? One thing about that for me was, you could see everything on one screen and the space was not wasted. If it WAS wasted, we had options to where you could control everything you wanted to see. I still think Sonar has the "look" of a serious and intimidating DAW in a good way. We just have to have colors, options and less wasted space. What's cool about Sequoia and Reaper is...one button push and the mixer totally changes. Not just colors...but everything. What can I say....I like my DAWs like I like my women....attractive and intelligent. :) That said, "attractive" doesn't mean a trophy woman or DAW....just one that *I* think is attractive. :) I think this has been a pretty cool discussion and hope the Bakers are reading this without being offended. The majority of us wouldn't be here posting if we didn't care about Sonar. We'd all love to see it be the best DAW it can be. That doesn't mean we need to "cop" the others...we just need to observe some of the things that are going on and implement them our way the same way we learn a guitar lick. You learn the lick...then you expand on it until it becomes your own. It may never totally be yours....but hey, there's nothing wrong with "inspired by" as you know quite a few DAW companies have borrowed from us...we have borrowed from them....to me, you implement what works in your own way and deliver the goods. :) -Danny

Looks do matter I will concede that. After all if one is working with something it can't hurt that it is a pleasant experience. Each of these examples offer something that the bakers at CW could grab the best attributes from and incorporate them into a new and more functional and user friendly CV. The basic way that the CV works is superb and needs no reworking. What is needed is a much better way for that basic functionality to be presented. I would love a new CV based on vector graphics and not on bitmaps. This would allow for easy resizing without loosing detail. To have the ability to display all likely sends used in a project. I am not all that sure about color but with the old 8.5 CV because the user had total control over its color that issue was nonresistant. I don't think many would say they are unable to get a great song using the X2 CV. But some things could be quicker and less confining. And it has to be said that a beautiful looking CV might add to one's inspiration and willingness to work on.

I'm still in love with this though and can't believe this is Reaper! I've done a project or two in Reaper and some of the user contributed skins are absolutely awesome. Once again, in Reaper the Console displays as much or as little info as you need. There are things that have to be monitored in real time and you need to see them. Other things only need to be seen if you need to tweak them and they come up in a window with a right mouse click. I use my sends to produce custom mixes for headphones. I like to be able to see what the levels are set at for at least 5 sends. Send panning is usually done later and not when I am in "stress mode" while tracking. A well designed console view is ideal for tracking, IMHO.

Cakewalk needs to get on the ball with that. Then again, that might be in conflict with this touch screen mentality that they seem to be fascinated with at this time.

I still like the minimilist look Of course, if you're doing everything in the box, I can understand needing to see more. I still like the big consoles though. Probably never own an SSL, but there are some sweet digital consoles out there now. Presonus makes a few..... would be nice if you could store your mix in the DAW (in this case capture) & it would play back all your fader movement & effects automation through the mixer. I mentioned before, I've pretty much forsaken computer DAWs in favor of my trusty old AW4416, which hasn't been so trusty lately. But that's what I want. A better AW4416. Well, the Roland machines were great, the VS2480 with it's video output, but still slow & puny compared to today's computers.

Mod Bod Sandmännchen Hi Dave, it is the Dark Blue Mixer for Sequoia and Samplitude from Birdline Skins http://skins.birdline.gr/screenshots/screenshots_dark_blue_v12.html Thanks. I've been trying to ignore the skins for Samplitude. I got hooked on the skins for Reaper and I spent more time diddling with how it looked than using it. That was one of the reasons Cake did away with colors and options...or so I heard early when X1 was released when they were asked "where did the colors and other options go?!" Their answer was pretty much "we didn't want to see people mess around with that stuff to where they "messed around" more than "they worked". Though I can agree with that...WE should always have that choice. :) -Danny

They wanted the OS to be as simple as possible and they thought people should be using the devices with as little fuss as possible, instead of fiddling with a ton of options. It's a good philosophy when designing a smartphone for Mr & Mrs Average. DAW users, however, are tech heads by definition. They know their way around a computer and they like to fiddle. You could spend all day setting up (i.e. "messing around with") Sonar to suit your workflow. Screen layouts, track templates, plugin layouts, keyboard shortcuts, preferences, instrument definitions, drum maps and what have you. So why not colors? In an incredibly complicated piece of software that offers potentially billions of different parameter combinations, what is so special about custom colors that made Cakewalk think "hmm....that's just too much freedom"? It really is bizarre. My guess is that the new code that they wrote for the X-series was designed in such a way that retaining color customization would have been outside of their development budget (and time constraints). It was probably decided that UI bitmaps were going to be quicker, easier and cheaper to implement than a fully customizable, liquid layout.

John If thats true Danny don't you think that is rather paternalistic? To be honest John, I'm not sure what to think of it. Though I'm probably not saying what was said correctly, I know when I read it, it bothered me. It was when X1 was first released and someone questioned why so many things we could do in 8.5 and below were no longer there. Colors, tool bars, you know all the options we used to have? One of the Bakers made a comment that was somewhere along the lines of "you should be working on music, not spending loads of time tweaking." It was something to that effect. I just remember being pretty upset when I read it because I sincerely don't think anyone should make that choice for me even if I'm taking it a bit more serious than it is. At the end of the day, we STILL don't have colors or customization back. In all honesty, even though I'm not down with the lack of colors and options in X2, it's still a good looking DAW. It's just that when I'm used to certain options being there that are just stripped away because someone thinks I should do music without worrying about the appearance of this DAW when I work on it for 16 hours....and they make a statement like that...it's just the wrong thing to say to me. I love choices...what can I say? Remember in most of the Windows systems...they allowed you to use a "classic" look so you'd not be totally out of your element? I thought that was a great idea. They sort of eased you into it. Once you learned the OS, THEN you could maybe experiment with the different looks. But you had that choice. As each new OS comes out...sure, we no longer want a Windows 3.1, 95 or 98 look that we need to revert back to. But it was cool you had those options when you bought a new OS. I don't mean to sound like I want "old options". I just want OPTIONS and would like to congratulate the brainiac who thought it was a good idea to rip out the colors and incredible tool bar options we had in Sonar for many years. What a horrible decision. I bet he's either no longer with the company and doesn't use Sonar as often as I do. LOL! :) Ah I'm just being crabby....but it still was a bad move! :-Þ (watch knowing my luck, he's still with the company and will come on here and yell at me. lol) I just feel so "locked" when using Sonar without options, colors, ability to call more shots and customize. You don't really notice this stuff until you do without all the stuff we used to have and then try a few other DAWs that have the ability to customize. Especially when you try something like Reaper that has a tweak for a tweak of a tweak and a color change for everything in it. I know it's only cosmetic and shouldn't be something I worry about, but I can't help what floats my boat. At any rate, I'm looking forward to whatever the next X (or whatever it may be called) will be like. I hope thay've been listening to us and they give us something mind-blowing with options and all the stuff we've been asking for to be fixed, changed, or altered. I think if I had my choice, the first thing I want outta here is that audio engine thing. It seriously has to go. That's another thing you don't notice how much of a nuisance it is until you use another DAW that doesn't have that. Granted, everything else in the other DAW may suck lol....but it beats that engine shutting down on me all the time at 64 or 32 buffers. Nothing else I use drops out on me other than Sonar at those buffer sizes. Anytime I record, as soon as I press stop, bang, dead engine. I just hate it...no one else has it, why do we need it? And of course...colors, options, better console with sends and visibility...you know...the same stuff we've been asking for that just doesn't seem to be important enough to implement. I don't ask anymore...I just do my work and try not to vent other than 3-4 times per year. When i vent it's because I'm passionate about the software and just wonder how many of these dev guys literally work with the software...not on it. Or, do they make changes for themselves because they can and shoot us the finger sliently? It really does make me wonder at times because some of the decisions that get made really surprise me. Here's hoping for a better Sonar. :) -Danny

Mike: Yeah, Panup made that for me based on my 8.5 Sonar look and I use what you saw in X1. I've not been as fortunate in X2 with that mod though. When using his new Duckbar, the theme he made for me doesn't translate quite the same even though he tweaked it for X2. I just never mentioned it to him because he's done so much for me. Watch he'll read this and yell at me for not telling hime about it. LOL! John: totally with you. I'm a spoiled little brat...lol...I want my colors, my completely visible console, sends visible, a few different console looks...and all of this visible without scrolling. I've learned to work with and accept the choices they made....I just think it would be nice to have other options within. The program works well and doesn't crash...that's 95% of the battle for me. Though it's a bit weird sometimes, it still doesn't crash on me thank God. So all in all, that's a good thing and more important than the comestic/image type things I'd like to see brought back. I still hate that audio engine though. LOL! :) -Danny

There's a mass of users who just want to get their work done approximately in the fluent way they've used to. They have no need nor will to stand in the frontline of development and spend their valuable time learning the same things over and over again. The technical progress, faster CPUs, SSDs etc. makes them happy enough. Development is important, of course, but the changes in software design should be implemented so that workhorse-customers don't need to turn into computer nerds every time a software engineer comes up with a new idea.

Some may ask why don't I shut up and use Reaper and Samplitude? Well, SONAR has them beat when it comes to a midi implementation that I like. I've had it explained to me that Cakewalk came from a midi sequencer and tagged audio onto it and Samplitude came from a pure audio package and now is in catch up mode when it comes to midi implementation. Reaper is a very strong program but it sometimes feels like it was designed by a world-wide committee.

Development is important, of course, but the changes in software design should be implemented so that workhorse-customers don't need to turn into computer nerds every time a software engineer comes up with a new idea. well said.. i myself am ashamed of the time and money i have spent, to get a handle on all this DAW stuff. even though i am having a good time with the advances, i was way more prolific and productive when i didn't know or have any of this. Sonar, Pro Tools, Reaper etc. etc. is basic and straight-forward now...only because i had years of fooling with it. looking back, its been alot of features implemented that were a **** to learn, that have never really worked right, nor updated or revamped. eg. Audiosnap, V-vocal were a complete waste of time. especially if you graduated to the better 3rd party stuff. it just seems to me one LE version after another. Avid has said it is not bringing ANYTHING NEW to the table regarding PT11..they are marketing stability and efficiency. all you are getting for all that money, is what you should have had years ago .. hundreds, to some, thousands of dollars and versions ago...the long metering is about it folks..for all your good bread and loyalty..
