Calamity Pop - Don't Care, RMX Remix

This'll probably be the first single off the next album. It moves quite quickly.
It's called Don't Care'.

There's more instruments in here than I'd care to list. If you listen carefully you'll hear me playing the kitchen sink in there too.

Fun, high energy. Nice movement on the chorus. Don't think I'm all that crazy about how the echo works on the openning piano, doesn't support the beat for me.

    Hi Ed

thanks for listening. I'll take another look at the piano echo.

Alawn, waddya mean? It took me ages to get that trashy tone! Kinda like surf punk metal thrash gonzo dog doodah day band. This song has been a couple of years in the making and was gonna go on Pop Friction but we decided to leave it off and spice it up a bit more for the sophomore album. coming soon to a shop near you

That guitar sound is totally wild. sounds like something the Edge from U2 would've come up with.

heya paul - good move to leave this for the 2nd album. think the first album had quite a few good tunes already. btw, was thinking u shld get that 'live' version recorded some time for the next album (where they played and sang at the launch). like a bonus track or somethin. with salim on guits definitely, tho not dissing paul daniels considering i've taken lessons from him...:) noticed that local music has taken a leap here in sg. been seeing quite a few albums out now. apaprently doing pretty ok too. cheers

Two thumbs up! Your production skills are excellent. The song has a nice groove and the vocals are superb.

Daryl, Toby, thanks for the good words. It's always a great pleasure when you know that someone appreciates the work. This track has taken more than 2yrs to produce, including long gaps of not listening to it so that I can go back with fresh ideas. That's the only way to really get complex productions like this bedded in properly.

Yes it is Stylus RMX, but there's also a DR008 in there with some Scott Rockenfield drum loops thrown in for good measure. The DR008 hits are singles from the Rockenfield set, a 70MB drum sample set that I use as the backbone of most of our 'rock' work.

    Have a great day.

I think the echoed piano is fine. It fits the style.

I like the heavier guitar tone!

The melody-rap thing in the verse is okay but the little dropping pattern at the ends of the phrases like at 0:45 and 0:49 sounds bad to me. I think the rest of it works melodically, but the one little bit annoys me.

The ending stops too abruptly, that little guitar riff at the end needs a short fade out.

I listened to both postings with RMX. I must say they both come out with a bang when the drum grooves start very impressive first 30 seconds or so (which I guess is what we all want). But after that they kind of wear me down. Would it be possible to punctaute the songs in certain places with those drums? The variation would be nice.

Otherwize totally superb production. Is this all recorded at home?

    Peter, Kiwi

thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.
Kiwi, the variation is a good idea and I'm already on the way with some of it. It's always more difficult to take out than to put in.

Yes, it was all recorded at home on SONAR. The studio is documented on our site (click the banner below)

    Cool tune!

It's funny, cuz this type of pop is so 'un-American.' And that's not a bad thing, mind you. Just that it is so different from our pop. It is actually much more sophisticated musically, although with it's disco-styled flavor it feels a little 'outdated' by our standards. But again, this isn't derogatory just an observation. American pop is much more influenced by hip-hop now, and so the sounds and samples are much brasher and more "street", whereas this feels more like a disco.

Singer's got a great voice, and I liked the guitar tone. It does cut off way too harshly, considering how much the tune moves (as you said). Sorry it took me so long to get to this...

Nice production work Paul. In no way does it sound like it's coming from some guy's home studio.

What the heck happened, I almost missed a Calamity song!

Sorry I didn't post earlier Paul, I didn't see this one..

The song is done with your typical excellence, I hear nothing out of place. How are your record sales doing? When do I get to hear the sophomore album?

    Hey Paul!

I know it's been a while but I'll be making visits to the forums a little more frequently than in the past few months.

This song has a lot of energy and reminds me of the early 80s white UK funky stuff like Spandau Ballet & especially Duran Duran when that guitar punches in.

I was not too impressed with the lyrics (not the vocals) on the first listen but as my media player loops and the song played a few times, they grew on me. I don't know if this is a red flag or not. For some reason the lyric style reminds me of John Mayer (who I cannot stand and possibly the reason for me not being too impressed on the first listen). It is obvious that I am in the minority on the Mayer issue as his huge success suggests.

    Ta!
