Calling Sonar X1 users who also use Studio One .....Audio Engine Question ?

Hi all

Putting aside all the bells and whistles and features etc......  I am interested in the opinion of those of you who have used X1  and  Studio One.

I do all my work at  32  or  48  samples  [ very low latency ]  and use a stack of live-input monitored VST's and EFX.

I use a RME FireFace UC

I am not looking for a debate over which is  " best ".

For those of you that have experieicne with both X1 and  S1  and  from a purely Audio Engine perspective which would you say has the most stable and smooth Audio Engine for very low latency work  ?

Thanks,
Tim

Using 8.5.3 here so make of that what you will but in terms working at the lowest latencies which for me is 48 samples, Sonar wins for me purely on that basis. Bear in mind that I'm only ever using one input at a time so Sonar's advantage there I suspect would likely be even better when tracking multiple inputs.

At 64 samples I find there is little to choose between them although I prefer S1's tracking and comping options which for me personally mitigate the extra 16 samples.

I still prefer to do my final mixdown in Sonar because of the seemingly (to me) more robust audio engine and efficient resource usage over S1 when under the stresses of having many instances of various plug-ins running.

Well I don't fit your exact criterea but those are my particular findings on the hardware listed below FWIW.

In my limited experience with S1, at least on my system, it is more robust and stable than Sonar in that it is truly "gapless".  By that I mean I can do, well, anything at all while the transport is playing back...add a vst...pop up a gui and tweak...fiddle with envelopes...heck, I could probably do my xmas shopping at amazon.com while the thing is running...but, YMMV.

That's great because the other threads were getting hijacked and were getting a little silly.....

My car is faster than yours so I am a better driver

It's always good to see what users do find useful in their DAWs because the developers are all watching each other ( and their users) these days and the DAWs are becoming a little less polarised as a result of the "cross pollenation"....

I do think that professionals are more interested in rock solid stabilty than whatever new bells and whistles are on offer and that's what the serious developers should be focusing on....

It's hilarious to see guys who get a newly released synth and then declare to the world that they have found their new "go to"

    +2

I still do most of my serious work (paid and/or with clients present) in SONAR 8.5, because I know it so well and can work around any issues and long standing bugs.  But as "my'olpal" <G> sez..............."it is more robust and stable than Sonar in that it is truly "gapless"."

I downloaded the demo last week and have been trying it out.  I think that just purely latency-wise there is a close tie when I compare Sonar 8.5.3 to S1.  I don't feel that same way with Sonar X1 (I don't exactly know why, but for some reason I get a lot more audio engine stops).  I have to increase my latency to prevent that from happening.

Like others have said, I think the real surprising thing about the S1 audio engine is truly having gapless audio streaming.  That alone sets it ahead (for me).  Not having to stop the playback (or just having it stop on you when you are trying to drop something in place) is pretty impressive.

I do hope Sonar folks read this stuff and get what we are seeing.  We want Sonar to be as rock solid as a few of its competitors.  With their new workflow and a true gapless audio engine that would really put them in a good position.

Now, I'm NOT saying you can't make music or make money with Sonar.  You absolutely can.  There is nothing wrong with the current version beyond the oddities (like so many audio engine dropouts I can't explain and lack of gapless audio) in my opinion.

    Haha, true dat :)

    but +2.

There is a huge difference in the stability and gaplessness between X1 and S1.  S1 wins hands down in that area.

There are many features in Sonar that are not in Studio One-- but that may not be of importance to some.
