Can Firewire interface be connected?

I have been using a UA-25EX USB interface for some time and am now considering changing to a Firewire interface.

As my laptop only has a 4-pin firewire port, will it be possible to connect with a 6 to 4 adaptor (e.g: http://cgi.ebay.com/1-5-Meter-Firewire-IEEE-1394-6-4-Pin-DV-iLink-Cable-/280406462269 ) or will this result in a loss of speed and an increase in latency?

Must I buy a laptop with a 6-pin firewire port? Thanks in advance for advice.

Someone's out of tune and it's not me 'cause I tuned up last Sunday!

I use a Tascam Firewire device with a couple of laptops and the main desktop and it is fine with a cable like you show.

Firewire is, however, a lot more flakey to set up than usb, and much more difficult to fault-find if it doesn't work. General advice has been to make sure there is a Texas Instruments chipset in the laptop.

The machines I use are all running XP. The laptops have to have all power timers switched to always on. I have a Vista laptop that doesn't want to work with Firewire and I would be very careful if looking for a Win 7 machine. I don't know about Macs or Linux.

Thanks for the advice. I have heard that USB 2.0 is the way to go - as fast as Firewire with less problems. I wonder if this is so?

I'm running Vista on my laptop so maybe I should steer clear.
