I don't believe there is a way to disable it. Im not a huge fan myself because if I need recently used plug ins, I will just clone them by Holding CNTRL and dragging them to a new FX bin. With that being said.. I wouldn't go as far as wanting to disable it. its only 5 seen. If your on a laptop (smaller screens) im sure real estate can be a concern. So I can see your point. there might be a way to use the registry to disable it, im not sure. Hope the bump helped By the way, do you use the Browser of FX bins to add plug ins ? I ask because I used to be a die hard FX bin user (the arrow/right click=add FX) but I started using the Browser a while ago and it has really grown on me. I like it. theres a thread going on here http://forum.cakewalk.com/TIP-Create-a-Favorites-folder-in-the-plugin-browser-m3640081.aspxHow to create a Fav's folder in the Browser, possibly someone will recommend a Registry hack (which I swear I saw somewhere) to limit the amount shown or even be able to disable it in the Registry.

I'm going to bump this too as i too prefer lean menu's and can do without the list.
However as it's a feature that's going to stay i'd want to re-suggest what I suggested in a different thread before this feature got inplemented:
** the list should contain most FREQUENTLY used fx **
That way as your habits change and your arsenal of available plugins grows you will have an automatically updated list of those plugins that are most likely your favorite and most needed. (No need for an additional "favorites" folder)
Just because i add the adaptive limiter to my master bus doesn't mean i want it to be top of the list in my add fx menu?!
Besides; for some peoples workflow the most frequently used might also be the most recently used :)
As so often: ideally the user would be able to configure his preference.

There seems to be a few peeps who don't much care for this, maybe they could do something similar to Studio One, where instead of having the 5 listed in a row taking up 5 spaces 'permanently', they could just have a 'Recently Used' drop down, thus only taking one space as it were. Studio One displays the last 10 recently used plugins, but you can either leave it expanded, or leave it collapsed and only open it if and when you need/want it, it doesn't bother me and I always leave it expanded, I find it useful, but the option is there to have it collapsed if you so desire. REAPER also has it set up so as you only see the recently used list if you so choose. There would be any number of ways to have it so it suits most people on both sides of the fence

+1 They should also be in a fly out rather than listed in the main menu IMO.

Seems to be some naysayers regarding this new "recent plugins used" feature addition . . . isn't Cakewalk just trying to save us some time, fishing through the drop down menus of our vast collections of plugins . . . come on, don't you find yourself using your same five amazing plugins over and over again ? . . . or, are we just mad that there's no "off" switch in the preferences for this new thing ? I actually like it a lot.

Whether it's useful or not is up to the individual. My custom menu is already set up in a more logically organized way than a 'last used'. It could be a useful feature for many but not for me. In my case an option to turn it on or off would be as useful as the feature itself.

Add me to this list. Otherwise, yeah, I'd like to disable it. It's no help to me, especially when it lists the same plug-in twice. (I don't know why it does that, and I don't really care to find out. I'd rather just turn it off entirely, if Cakewalk will give us the option.) Steve

I don't recall Cakewalk consulting their users on a lot of these new features they're introducing, they seem to go ahead and just do them based on internal development meetings . . . with no "opt out" possibility, whether you like the new feature or not ? Perhaps keeping up with the monthly update quota. This last monthly update was kind of lacklustered, summer break, who knows ? Still, I'm always amazed by what comes next.

I hadn't checked out SONAR's implementation as yet, but when I read the above ( in bold), I thought to myself that sounds pretty stupid. So I updated to the latest version to see, I couldn't get it to display the same plug twice, I tried but it just didn't happen. What I saw was similar behavior to how Studio One and REAPER do it, if you add a plugin that is already in the recent plug list it isn't duplicated but promoted to the top of the list, which would be the sensible thing to do, as apposed to duplicating.

I haven't seen this either. The only way I can imagine this happening is if someone were to open two different versions of the same plugin. (Vst2 vs vst3, DXI vs VSTi, 32 bit vs 64 bit, etc) I like the feature myself. Very handy.

Well done, just tried that, and it does indeed happen if you add the vst2version and vst3 version of same plug.

In theory, I could see that happening. Unfortunately, for the plug-in in question, I have only the 64-bit, VST2 version (there is no other version, other than AAX), and it's listed twice. I only have the plug-in installed in one location on the PC, and I uninstalled it thoroughly before upgrading it just before I updated SONAR. When I re-installed it, it had the same ID as the previous one, and I didn't even need to use the Plug-in Manager to find it. SPlat's never listed this plug-in in any list twice, so it still makes no sense as to why it's doing it now. So far, I've only seen SPlat do this with one plug-in, but I haven't used it on too many projects since the update, so I don't know how it will continue to behave. For those of us who compose, record, mix and/or master in different genres, the "last-used" plug-in (more often than not) is not the one you need for the next project. (A "last-used" list full of amp sims doesn't help me at all when I need to mix a synth project.) As others have suggested, letting us put our "favorite" plug-ins in that list might help more. Steve

Also, if you have the VST2 and VST3 versions installed, isn't SONAR supposed to default to the VST3 version (per "VST3 Migration" in the Preferences)? In theory, you should only see both versions in the list of synths/effects the Manager finds during a scan; you shouldn't see VST2 versions in your list of plug-ins to choose once you're back in Splat. So I'm not sure how you'd be able to choose both, unless you turned off the default, or you manually re-named or added the VST2 version, to make sure you could choose which one you wanted (which I've done for a couple of synths/effects). And that's fine. But with it set at the default, Sonar should hide the VST2 version. So in your case, you'll see both. But there's still no explanation why I see two of the same, single VST2 plug-in twice. (Of course, I'm not expecting you to figure out why this is happening; I'm only mentioning this for clarification. ) Basically, I know how Sonar is supposed to work--I just don't know why it's showing me the same plug-in twice. Just for grins, I clicked on each of the two entries in the "recently used" list. Sonar opened two instances of that plug-in (which I've never had in a project). So it really is listing it twice. Fortunately, it didn't add those two instances to the list, too. Steve

I think that the duplicate entries may have been to do with when the list hadn't ever been fully populated. I had duplicates showing in the menu to begin with and thought WTF, but since I have now used more than different five plug-ins it doesn't seem to do that any more. Either way, it's an unnecessary waste of space IMO and if there was a way to switch it off, I would. For those who want a go to list, it has always been easy enough to have the plug-ins displayed however you want them to be, so this seems to be very much a case of fixing something that wasn't broken whist still ignoring things that are.

To return to the OP's question, I've found you can disable it with seemingly no bad side-effects, although it does require registry editing: Ensure the user/group you are running SONAR under does NOT have "Create Subkey" privileges to the following two registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR\Platinum\Recently Used Plug-ins and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR\Platinum\Recently Used Plug-ins I had to fiddle with mine a bit and use explicit Deny permissions as the user I run under is in the Administrator group.

It also doesn't display the plugin's name correctly as I have changed them in my custom menu layouts. I use Steinberg's way of marking vst3 ( /// ) for certain plugins as I sometimes need to use vst2. It only shows the scanned name so I have no way of knowing which is being used.

All in all, this appears to be a well-intentioned solution in search of a problem. Hopefully, Cakewalk will give us the option to not have to edit the Registry just to remove what we didn't want in the first place (not that I mind doing that, thank you, @KPerry). And if we do want it, hopefully they'll find a way to have the list use the VST names we use and that we're familiar with, instead of whatever it's using now. Steve

Generally, I'll "test" several plugs before deciding which one works best for the track. In this situation, the list is always evolving, therefore a total waste of real estate. "Last Used" doesn't mean I want to use it again.
