Can I have option of either PCI card or USB in Sonar Producer 8.5 ?

Hello:

I have Sonar 8.5 Producer and have used it for years with an M-Audio PCI card on Windows XP, SP3.

I'm thinking about getting a guitar effects pedals that has a USB connection for audio.  I've never used a USB audio device before.

Is there any problem with using a USB audio device when a PCI audio card is already installed, or does the USB audio device just show up as another input / output in the I/O for a track?

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone using Sonar with a PCI card and also using a guitar effects pedal with USB.

Thanks.

John

An effects pedal plugged into USB will act like a separate audio interface as far as what a DAW will see.
Just keep using the M-audio as you have been and just use the left out from the pedal
into the M-audio (for Mono) or left and right out from pedal into the M-audio for stereo.
The pedal probably comes with some software so you can plug it into the usb and do programming
to your pedal through the computer, save presets and such.

ASIO mode will only allow one audio interface into Sonar but I think you can switch to the other mode ( sorry forgot what it's called WKR??)  and it will work.  ASIO4all is said to work but it has other issue and seems to have it's pros and cons. Because yours is a PCI card you can't swap interfaces. You can with 2 USB  ASIO audio interfaces.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you use multiple audio devices in Sonar they all have to be set at the same sample and bit rates. Also, use your best audio device as both recording and timing master. Personally, I've never had much luck using multiple devices but I've never spent a lot of time trying it. But for it to work all the devices will have to be on the same page, so to speak.

When I DO use my USB capable Digitech RP350 I record its audio through its analog outputs and, while I connect it via USB (to tweak settings), I do not enable its drivers in Sonar. I like to record at 48 kHz 24 bit but the Digitech device is limited to 44.1 kHz and 16 bit so this solution is best for me.

Another point, Why pay for an EFX pedal when most of it is already in Sonar or can be free from KVR. Guitar Rig?? I've tried a few multi EFX pedals over the years and they just suck your tone down the toilet ( unless that is your tone??!!) . The best EFX are still the classic stomp boxes, your Pick ups and a good tube amp. And your fingers!
A lot of music products are on the market claiming USB and then you find there are no proper drivers and it's not even a useful feature.
