Can I lock all the clips in a folder together?

Is there any way to lock all the clips and automation in a track folder, so when I move the folder all the tracks always stay together?

Thank you

There's no need to lock anything.

If you move a folder, all of it's contents including the tracks, clips & automation will move with it

For some reason this is not how it works for me.
When I'm trying to move closed folder only selected clips are moving with it.

They actually are in the folder:

I'm trying to move all clips in the "Jajus" folder to about 4 minutes mark.

    Thank you

With the folder collapsed you should be able to treat it's contents as one object, Select all the tracks within the folder in the area shaded blue in your picture, select the move tool, control+ drag the contents to the desired position.

"Control + drag" would copy the contents - if you want to move them just drag

If you do want to actually to want to group them this definitely possible - from memory you just select the clips and the option is in the "right click" menu

Oopsie, Boydie is right. Just drag the contents.

To move all the clips with automation (so the envelope events stay at the correct spot on the clips) I think you actually have to use the Edit > Copy/Cut Special function. Otherwise the clips will move but the automation will stay put.

So select the folder (which will select everything inside the folder) > Edit > Cut Special (in the Cut Special dialog make sure automation is checked) then paste at the new time (I think you have to set the Now Time for the start of the selection to land where you want).

I've never actually done this so I may be wrong. If it was just the clips with no automation (or if the automation is on the clips/not in lanes) then just selecting and dragging would work.

I just tried this and the bus/track automation selection was greyed out under cut special dialog.

Thanks for letting me know. I just booted up so I'll check it out. I've really only been digging into fancy automation wrangling over the past few months so I'm not proficient yet... but this is something I want to really nail down.

I do recall in some of my past explorations that those options would get greyed out under certain circumstances (something to do with another parameter needed to be checked as well that didn't seem related and actually annoyed me).

The ease of manipulating automation has been a bit of a hair across my butt actually (one of the few in Sonar) so for now I'm just trying to really get a handle on how EXACTLY it all works so I can figure out workarounds. Ideally I'm hoping for some big automation improvements to come down the pipe.

    I'll be back.

    Cheers.

    Edit:

Test 1: I selected a track (that had a bunch of takes in it), added a couple Automation Lanes and created some envelopes. As long as the actual Automation Lanes were selected the envelopes moved with the clips. I tried multiple configurations of this where I...

Selected the Track with Take and Automation Lanes open (which selected all the take lanes and automation lanes). If I moved any of the clips or the parent track the envelopes moved with the clips. This is actually pretty cool... but as you'll see Automation Lanes NEED to be open for the envelopes to be SELECTED when selecting the track. If they are closed only the clips will be selected and when you move them the envelopes stay put (because they are not selected).

If I closed the Take Lanes but left the Automation Lanes open then selecting the track still selected all of the clips in the Take Lanes as well as the Automation Lanes (which are open). Moving the Parent Track comp (or opening lanes again and moving a clip) moved the automation.

So no matter what selecting the track will select the Take Lanes whether they are opened or closed which allows you to move them all whether Take Lanes are open or closed (if they are closed you'd move the parent track). We can safeley ignor Take Lanes now becuae they move no matter what at track level.

The difference comes in with Automation Lanes. They NEED to be open when selecting the track or the lanes need to be selecting manaually (which can only happen when they are open). Otherwise they will not be selected and the envelope will not move when you move clips or the Parent Track comp.

    .....

And here I think I found a bug and will probably post a thread so it can be confirmed.

If you select the track (or a single Take Lane) and/or the automation lanes individually then CLOSE the Automation Lanes... THEN move a clip or the parent track... once you reopen the automation lanes the envelopes are GONE. Like totally disappeared. Not reset to a flatline or anything just GONE...

Except once I started playback it seemed the parameters those envelopes were linked to respond to the now missing envelopes. Freaky deaky. I cannot tell whatsoever whether the envelopes actually moved because I can't see them anymore. I would have to create markers and notes on what envelope events I worte at what point in the timeline to check that.

Yeesh... I haven't even got into the Cut Special / folder stuff yet and I'm finding weirdness.

I'll do some more tests on that other stuff but think maybe I'd better type up a bug report test thread on this before I forget.

    Cheers.

From what I can see, in order to move all the clips together I need to select them all, create selection group (from right-click menu) and then all clips slide together.
But when I try to grab and move/slide the folder only one of the clips moves inside the folder.

Yeah, sorry... I haven't even gotten to the Folder stuff or the Cut/Copy special yet because I found a bug working from track level up.

In the meantime what should work is open the folder, open all the automation lanes on all the tracks (that have automation), select the folder (so all tracks, clips and OPEN automation lanes are selected) then move ONE of the selected clips or parent tracks to where you want.

The problem seems to be with simple select/drag is that envelopes won't be selected unless automation lanes are open.

There are quite likely many other ways to do this but if you are in a pinch that is a workaround until I or someone else can come up with something better.

I do still think the answer lies in Cut/Copy/Paste Special.

Alternatively, if it weren't just one set of tracks you could just "Insert Time" but I think you only wnat that one folder to move. Not the entire project.

    Cheers.

There is also a way to force envelopes to appear in the Parent Track instead of in lanes (like how automation used to work in the old days). This may alter the selection process thus making the automation move with the clips without all this extra futzery. I do not know and only read about that option recently (and forget how to enable it).

Okay here's what worked on my end: open the folder, select all tracks in the folder at the previously mentioned folder shaded blue area, move the a track with the move tool. That moved all clips in all tracks and all of the automation in the folder.

I am starting to get some quirky behavior with Jamaica Plain: When I try to minimize Sonar only the project minimizes and the close/size/minimize widgets at the top right disappear from Sonar. The auto hide task bar is nowhere to be found, I can open the task bar using the windows keyboard command and shut down Sonar.
