Can I replace my AMD athlon x2 4800 with a Phenom X3 processor?

I just read in a back issue of Sound on Sound that AMD Phenom X3 processors are socket-compatible with the athlon X2. My Gateway is fitted with an Athlon x2 4800, and it seems like an upgrade to an X3 is a pretty cheap way (at about $160) to get more grunt into the machine. Can someone more technically sophisticated than me please advise? I consider this, if it works, to be my last upgrade. This desktop machine is perfectly capable of handling most of what I throw at it, and extending its life for a couple of years seems like reasonable value for money. Thanks, Lightninrick

Should have mentioned that my CPU is a socket 939. Various searches show little to no availablity for AMD x2 CPUs with this socket; and it appears that the x3 CPUs are socket AM2. So I think the question is answered.

FWIW, Whenever there's a significant achitecture change... that means a new motherboard.
The positive side is that the power we get (for the money spent) is just incredible.
Today's $300 CPU is a whole lot better than a $300 CPU five years ago.

I have never replaced a motherboard in one of my computers. Is that a complex job, and are there any other inter-relationships I need to watch out for (e.g. when you replace the motherboard you also have to replace X, Y, Z...)? Thanks and Happy New Year, LR
