Can I transfer tracks / songs from a Boss BR 1600 stand alone to Sonar 8 Producer
I am a newbie, but loving Sonar 8. I did a search, but could not find a similar post. Sorry if this is repetitive. I used to use a Boss BR 1600 to record songs. Now using Sonar 8 Producer exclusively. I am learning how to use it via the Scott G Power book, and reading the posts here. Wondering if there is some way to transfer via USB, (or other method), the tracks or songs I have saved on the hard disk of the BR 1600. Is that possible ? If so, any help on procedure would be appreciated. Thanks.

You'll need to refer to the boss's manual on how to set it up to transfer via USB. Its a boss procedure, not a sonar procedure. After you get your audio in your pc, you can just import into sonar by using the import audio or drag and drop. note that wave file should be broadcast, so it has its time-code and know where to drop in sonar.. I also have a BR1600 and Sonar 8. The BR records in a proprietary format. You will have to export the tracks as wave files to the computer via USB. Once on the computer, Import into Sonar is as easy as drag and drop. This works well for transferring single stereo tracks, but becomes very time consuming when trying to export multi-tracks. I have learned through trail and error that the best way to get multi-tracks out of the BR into Sonar is to Sync the machines with MIDI Sync and then live bounce them 2 at a time into Sonar. Bouncing the tracks simply means 'playing' them out of the BR Line Out while Sonar is recording them. I pan each instrument hard left or right to copy them two at a time. If you do this without MIDI sync, the tracks wont be lined up in the computer. I used to copy a dry 'click sound' onto all tracks in the exact same spot. Then once the tracks were in Sonar, I lined up all the clicks to be perfectly in phase, and as a result all the tracks were perfectly lined up. Then I began to use MIDI sync. This locks the NOW TIME of the two devices together (more or less) so I don't need to use the 'click align trick' anymore. If you are just getting started and don't want to bother with MIDI sync (it is sometimes a headache to get going) try the Click Trick. Watch your gain structure. I leave the track output faders at Unity Gain so as to not introduce any noise in the bounce process. Have fun.

The BR-1600 doesn't encode Broadcast Wave Time Stamps unfortunately.

Roland/BOSS has free telephone tech support for anyone using their products, M-F, 7:30 - 6:00 Pacific Time, and Here's the direct line to their digital recorders techs: 323-890-3741. They typically answer the phones quickly and hold times are very low. They're glad to help. I know because I used to work there.

Roland do a PC utility that I use to export tracks (and virtual tracks) as WAV files from my 4-track Boss Micro-BR. I know it will work with the BR900 which has 8 tracks but not sure if it will work with the BR1600 which, I presume, has 16 tracks. Maybe worth a look anyway. http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=699

The BR Wave File Converter Untility will not work with the BR-1600. They record in a different format. Which sucks. I do use it for my BR-600 though.
