Can I use Pyro's mp3 Encoder 'licence' in SONAR?

I just bought Pyro 1.5 (using my £15 Christmas Voucher from Cakewalk ) and have subsequently activated the mp3 encoder that comes with it.

I'm just wondering if the licence for the encoder allows me to activate the one in X2, or whether they are treated as separate entities?

Not a biggie, as on the odd occasion I've needed an mp3 of a project I've never had a problem with exporting a wave and converting it outside of SONAR, but if I should now be able to use the encoder/licence from Pyro, it would be nice to do so.

If this is possible, does anyone know how to set it up?

(I know there are other ways of using a third party Lame encoder within SONAR, but I'd just be interested to know if there's a 'one-time' encoder activation required for use in all Cakewalk products).

Many thanks in advance of any help and advice.

Well it seems to be working for me with Pyro.  So I guess so.

I don't understand this crazy moon language you speak.

What does the paid encoding do? I thought you just exported to mp3 (adding whatever tags in the process) and that was that.

I find it kind of... um... not so cool that we have to pay to get a proper, industry releasable version of our songs.

Oh well... at least I've got the capability now but after spending $600 on the Suite then X2 upgrade I figured that would be included.

It never has been except in Pro Audio. All these years after that those with Pro Audio had the MP3 encoder free. Now once you buy it you wont have to buy it again. I have never bought the MP3 encoder but I always had to authorize it using my Pro Audio disks. With Pyro installed it is working in X2.

oh... I actually didn't buy the encoder (seriously IDK what it's supposed to do but I'll check the manual). I bought Pyro AC. I'm guessing that's got me covered.

I think they are separate Strummy. I've had the Sonar encoder since 7 and all other Sonar versions installed find and use that one, but I had to activate the Pyro one to work in Pyro

I still have the old CW mp3 encoder that I got when I had GT 2.0. It's a little different too but still works great as a stand alone

And visa versa.  I had Pyro installed at work but after loading Sonar, I cannot figure out how to use the Pyro one - seems a bit odd. I purchased the activation years ago and use it at home but its frustrating to have to do both.

SONAR includes a 30 day trial of the MP3 encoder. Cakewalk does not own the license to the MP3 format and because not all users require the MP3 format, Cakewalk does not force you to pay for the license. If you need to export your projects as MP3 files, you can purchase the encoder directly from www.store.cakewalk.com.
huh... learn something new every day.

I think you might be right about that G.

When I try to export as an mp3 from inside X2 I get this message:

Incidentally, I can't find anywhere on the site that allows me to upgrade the encoder, only purchase it. There is nothing in my Product Registration either, just the serial and reg codes for Pyro.

Seems like a bit of a swizz to me, although I have absolutely no intention of buying it again, just for the (very small) convenience.

I fully understand why Cake has to charge for the encoder once - but surely I should be able to use it in all my Cakewalk software?

I wonder if it's because Pyro is currently on offer for $19.99 instead of $39.99? I mean to say, they charge $19.99 just for the encoder on its own elsewhere in the store

If nobody else has managed to do this, I think I'll have to send Customer Support an email and see what the deal is on this.

I got the mp3 encoder when I bought my version of pro audio many years ago and I can still use it today. The only problem I have is the encoder does not work in 64 bit. I don't know if there is an updated new encoder that works in 64 bit.

I would hate to spend the money to update the encoder only to find out I got the same one. It may be a good thing just to get the latest version of Pyro pro audio. I remember all the problems I had with Pyro 2004 and makes me hesitant. This is one of the many reasons I don't use 64 bit.

I use mp3 encoding as much as I use wave formats. It would be great to hear about any problems people are having with Pyro Pro Audio. Maybe I will go down into the Pyro forum and hang out a while.

You can always use the Lame encoder - its free.

There was a post a couple of years ago (!) saying how to set it up in Sonar.

As far as I can remember the encoder works fine w/ Pyro.  However, I don't think it will work in SONAR - they are separate licences.  Or at least none of the SONAR versions I had could use the Pyro license.

Yeah, I actually set up LAME last night when I couldn't find my dang Pro Audio 9 disk. LAME was originally showing up in X2 for me from some other app I installed (maybe Vegas), but X2a seemed to have hosed the configuration. Here's the thread I used to set it up again, but there are probably others. http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1255631

In short, the answer is "No".

You could, however, export from Sonar to a WAV file and then load that into pyro and convert it to an MP3.

Oh well, looks like I'll have to continue exporting waves from X2 and converting them in CDex.

You can still use MP3 in SONAR without paying for an encoder. Just use a free encoder like LAME. See this old forum topic...

It's completely lame (pun intended) that Sonar doesn't offer an MP3 encoder out of the box. Sure, I can export to MP3 after the fact (which I do), but this is just silly. It's not like MP3 is some obscure audio format no one really uses. At this point it's THE ubiquitous final audio format at this point. Make a .wav for CD's/masters, but ultimately, the MP3 is what the band is uploading to iTunes or putting on their website, posting on Soundcloud, etc.

I'd rather get charged for the license as part of the cost of Sonar (and have that go up a few bucks) then get asked to upgrade every time I forget that Sonar doesn't offer this pretty basic feature stock. It's so odd to hear the "we have the best EQ of any DAW, best channel strip, best reverb, etc." for Cakewalk not to offer a basic feature like MP3 export.
It's time for Cakewalk to just suck it up, and change directions. MP3's aren't going anywhere, and if they really want to speed up my workflow: don't make me "pay to unlock" or go to a separate app to do an MP3 conversion.

BTW, thanks for the repost on the LAME link. That's a great workaround for now.

StepD - the ProAudio 9 CD probably will not work in win7, contact tech support and they will send you a program to unlock the mp3 encoder. When I called about it a few months ago, it took minutes to get it sorted out.

As far as Pyro owners, I was under the impression that once you bought an mp3 license from CW, it was good for all their products forever. I would contact tech support and see if they will also supply the unlock program for SONAR.

+1 This has always been my feeling as well. In my opinion Sonar is the best DAW out there. To not offer a basic feature like export to mp3 is indeed lame! Just how much more would this jack up the price of Sonar anyway?

I used the lame encoder a few times before. It was a long time ago when I first tried 64 bit. I like what Sonar does with it's mp3 export encoder. The ability to put in Tag information and the ability to adjust the overall quality is simple and great.

You should not need to use a third party application for one of the most popular export formats out there!

If we are lucky it will be the next thing cakewalk gives away for free for being an X2 user. It will be interesting to see what they offer Jan 1st.

It is a small on-time charge that, for those that do not use mp3 or elect to product mp3 by some other method are not forced to pay when the purchasing SONAR. I though this discussion was exhausted years ago, guess not.

Thanks for the info scook. At this point I may just say screw it and stick with LAME (seems to work well). It's been kind of a pain having to deal with the Fraunhofer activation over the years anyway. It only took me about five minutes to set up LAME, and hopefully the Reg keys will continue to work in future versions of Sonar.

Yeah... I just didn't know they had to pay someone else for the license. Makes sense now but still would have been nice to have had it included in the Suite. Meh. Doesn't matter now anyway.

If you're willing to pay extra for it, pay the twenty bucks and then you'll have it forever.  Better yet, use the $20 Sonar just gave all registered users and use it to pay for the MP3 encoder.

StepD - yeah, I only use the embedded mp3 player once when I install SONAR to make sure it still works. The upside of the the new unlocking process, is that it is a one time event. Upgrades do see the previous mp3 status and unlock too.

I'm going to venture to guess that at this point the vast, vast, vast majority of people recording music, are exporting to MP3 with enough regularity to justify it.

If you're willing to pay extra for it, pay the twenty bucks and then you'll have it forever.  Better yet, use the $20 Sonar just gave all registered users and use it to pay for the MP3 encoder.

This should be an "out of the box" feature like in every other DAW.

Try and name me DAWs that you know for a fact don't have this feature other than Sonar. Maybe there are some, but I don't know of any.

It's not a dead horse. Cakewalk can change this at any time. Us pretending like it's ok to not have an MP3 encoder build into a DAW in this day and age certainly won't do anything to change that, whereas a group of people voicing their opinion might at least cause Cakewalk to reocncider.

Who is pretending? It is OK by me. Sure they could change their mind. As a matter of fact, they just gave every X1 and X2 owner the opportunity to add it free of charge. All they had to do was use the $20 coupon for the license.

Is this the one to get for X2? It mentions X1 but not X2: http://www.store.cakewalk...ductid=10-CWMA1.00-10E
