SI plays like any other instrument.  You need a midi input - keyboard for live playing.  This either comes in via a midi input on your interface or straight into a usb (if your keyboard supports midi over usb).  Coming out - it would be best to have a separate audio interface.  On board cards deliver subpar audio performance and "iffy"(technical term) latency and dependability.  The interface will deliver stereo outputs carrying the audio to your sound system for playback.

I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions for a specific audio interface if you follow this up.

Well i'm using my Keystation pro 88.  I wanted to use the sounds because i didnt want to carry a whole lot of gear this particular time.  So if I use the USB/Midi output on my Keystation pro, that would allow me to use the SI as a module?
what settings would i have to set on Cakewalk to do this?

In your daw (digital audio workstation like SONAR, etc) you'll have to set up the midi in on the keystation.  Then you'll have to route that midi to a track(s) w/ SI.  SI goes out to your interface output.  SI doesn't do stand alone (I think) - you'll have to use a DAW to initialize it and just play straight through.  A DAW will have to do all the set up.  How do you play SI at home?

I just use it for recording at home, not as a standalone softsynth

Just for the record, according to Cakewalk's Studio Instruments product web pages it does actually work as a standalone instrument without a host application.

techead is correct, it comes as a plugin and as a standalone app.

Just select the Keystation as your MIDI input and audio out to your sound system.  I don't play out live but I have used the standalone version to play at home via my Keystation.

You may want to use the plugin in your DAW if you want to play along with backing tracks though.
