Can Someone Please Explain? PC Pure-Vintage-Modern EQ Specifics?
Hi Gang... For the umpteenth time I'm wondering... What are the actual differences between the Pure, Vintage, and Modern settings for the ProChannel EQ? I hear a difference but I'm not sure what I'm hearing.... ;-) Thanks... Keni

I don't know the exact specifics, but it does have to do with the Q setting (maybe more). On PURE the Q narrows as it is increased/decreased On VINTAGE the Q widens as it is increased/decreased On MODERN the Q stays relatively constant. You can see this happening in the Plot, but the Q value itself does not change on the control. Maybe someone can give you more specific details - but that is roughly what is happening.
Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take! This is the best I can recall learning after asking repeatedly: They are basically Q presets... it's more complicated than that really... they are presets for how the Q reacts to level changes. You have constant Q where the width varies with level, Dynamic Q where the q adjusts to provide constant width, and something in between. The vintage may have a notch right in the peak. best regards, mike

Yup, the 'Q' behavior is the difference. It also behaves very differently on shelves, too. SP

Thanks Guys... I had a suspicion it was related to Q but as I didn't see an obvious change (hard to see in it's very limiting view)... That makes sense to me... I'm enjoying the ProChannel more over time, but it's very frustrating with small increments (visually) in the current implementation. Here's hoping the future brings us a better viewscreen... Keni

Hmmm... Occasionally the screen does auto-zoom to a better visual... but not always...

Keni, The PC will auto-zoom by default, and the zoom kicks in at various levels. You can, however, disable the zoom if you prefer to see a constant view. This setting is in the PC options at the bottom of the ProChannel.

Seth Perlstein [Cakewalk ] Keni, The PC will auto-zoom by default, and the zoom kicks in at various levels. You can, however, disable the zoom if you prefer to see a constant view. This setting is in the PC options at the bottom of the ProChannel. Hi Seth... Thanks for that... I was already aware of it but it doesn't always work quite "right"... If I'm in the ProChannel and I change it, nothing changes in the grid until I close the PC and re-open it (sometimes)... Other times it changes as expected... I'm wodering if it has to do with using the high/low-pass filters as they extend far below a (for example) 6db range... I was leaving it set at auro and changing it when I could/wanted, but I believe now I'm gonna lock it in 6db mode as I rarely do any EQ beyond that range other than the end-filters... Thanks again... I kept looking at the Q changing when switching pure/vintage/modern, but the Q knobs never change their' relative anything... So 1.3 remains 1.3 for all three widths? ...Yet that's what it looks like. So should I believe this to be 1.3 is a different respective quantity for each mode? Thanks... I always feel better using things that I understand better... :-) Keni

Keni: You are correct, the value on the knob does not change, but the plot will reflect the differences. I tried to say that in an earlier post but couldn't come up with the right words. - PURE will start at that Q and get narrower during a cut/boost
- VINTAGE will start narrow, and reach that Q at a certain point. I do not know what the cut/boost needs to be to reach that point, nor if it continues to expand beyond that point.
- MODERN stays pretty close to the Q at all times.

Thanks codamedia... I think I understand what you're explaining and it would probably be easier to use math as it's probably a function of a certain curve... I'll continue to use my ears as usual, but it makes decisions easier when I understand what to expect! ;-) Thanks again... Keni
