Can X1 Sequencer control a hardware drum machine?

Can X1's sequencer trigger a hardware drum machine?

There are two ways a DAW can control a hardware drum machine.

1     Drum machine just produces sounds when midi notes are sent to it from your DAW. So all drum programming has to be done inside the DAW. Drum machine is just used for its sounds only and nothing else.

2     DAW sends midi clock to the drum machine and all drum programming is done in the drum machine. Patterns are created and sequenced into songs. DAW just clocks the whole thing along in time with its own tempo. In this mode all you have to do is tell your DAW to send a midi clock out on the port the drum machine is patched to. 

So which is it for you! Both have their merits. When the DAW is clocking the drum machine in scenario 2 then the you get rock solid timing from the drum machine and nothing will alter its timing due to what may happening inside your DAW. But it is time consuming because you have to program the whole song into the drum machine.

Getting the DAW to trigger the drum machine sounds is also good because of the fact you have a lot of control over the editing and probably way more control than the original drum machine has.

Personally I think many drum VST's are so good (Session Drummer 3 included) I think the need for hardware these days is not so great.

I've synced my Roland 505 since the invention of MIDI clock. Used to have to stripe the tape. On a 4 track you lost 1 track.

i remember backing up my drum machines data on tape as well and doing the synch losing track 1...or was it 4?..cant remember its been so long..
 
jeff also brings up a good point where no a days vst drums are so good you can forget about using your drum machines samples..theres better inside session drummer.bfd,addictive drums.
