Can anyone suggest a good sound synthesis book?

I am looking for an in-depth book on sound synthesis, a book that gives examples and not just giving you a vague overview. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Clearly I am biased in making these suggestions... There are two books I would recommend.

The first is Cakewalk Synthesizers: From Presets to Power User. Details (including a table of contents and sample chapter) are here:

    http://www.noisesculpture.com/cakewalk

You can read the thread on this forum about this book here:

You should also check out How to Make a Noise. This second book covers Z3TA+, Vanguard from ReFx, WusikStation from Wusik dot Com, Cameleon 5000 from Camel Audio, and Rhino from Big Tick. Best of all, there is a free version to download.

Hopefully that should be enough reading to get you going.

    All the best

+1 for Simon's book...or anything written by him. Simon is one of a very select few that can get synthesis across to even the complete novice without confusing the hell out of him or her.

There is a CDROM that gives examples of sounds and effects

Go to the Access (as in Access Virus) website and download the Analogue Synth Programming tutorial by Howard Scarr (you'll find it towards the bottom when you follow the link below). Even though it focuses on programming the Virus, the concepts are applicable to pretty much any subtractive synth:

"Cakewalk Synthesizers: From Presets to Power User"
    Great read!
The book takes you in a step by step approach,
so that you can get a handle on all those knobs and terms.
I'm actually begining to understand what's what !!
    Thanks Simon
