Can barely hear guitar connected via USB devices
Hello, total Sonar newbie here. I have the demo version of Sonar installed on my HP Envy laptop running Windows 10 Pro. I have ASIO4ALL v2 installed. With Sonar open, if I connect my guitar to the USB port using an Apogee Jam, Sonar recognizes it and it's available in the the Audio/MIDI setup. The same is true for my Peavey Vypyr when I connect it, Sonar sees the Peavy Vypyr device and prompts me to use it. Then I'll open a new project, ensure I have the input echo = on selected, and also Record = on.
I can barely hear the guitar, and it sounds distant and faint. I have the volumes up everywhere. I've tried it with and without headphones connected to the laptop, but still sound.
Any ideas why my guitar sounds like a low, distant, and barely audible?

Good grief, I just read this at the Apogee website: Apogee no longer supports Windows for any of its current products. Your right there are no drivers for the AJam (just ASIO4ALL) but you might have better luck with WASAPI in Windows 10 using sonar. Have you tried turning on input echo ? on the track you are recording to. "Apogee a relatively small company with limited resources"  . That's a good one.

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better. Sonar Platinum, Intel i7 –2600 CPU @ 3.2 GHz, 16 GB ram, 2x2TB internal drives and 1 1TB internal drive, Radeon HD 5570 video card, HP 25" monitor,

If you use a driver other than ASIO4ALL uninstall ASIO4ALL.

ASIO4All is like a red cape to a bull around here. Can anyone who is suggesting this is the problem explain why it is the problem? Can the OP explain exactly what "the volume up everywhere" means? On the face of it this sounds likely to be a problem with the gain prior to the A/D converter. What are the peak levels in the recorded track?

I just looked on Apogee's website. They still market to Windows users $99 for the mac/windows version. However, the device states it only works with core audio, so I suspect that is where the issue is.
Also, this is not an output device, so you need to make sure you are using a driver that supports you onboard sound to be able to hear propoerly. My preference is WASAPI (selected in Sonar - nothing to install), but some here like ASIO4ALL.

Apogee tell you to use ASIO4ALL for Windows with the Jam 96K, but don't even mention Windows at all for the Jam.
Which is not good really.
Having said that, if it's working at all I agree it seems likely the problem is to do with input gain in the Jam's preamp. I also suspect the lack of dedicated driver support means it's far from an optimal device to be using with Windows.
