Can i install all my VST's on a separate Drive ?
I have a Spare 160GB SSD and i want to install all my vst on this Drive so they will always be in one place and making updating hassle free. Reason for doing this is because i have everything going to my C drive in Cake folder and some in different folders on the drive. i want to put all meaning about 30 vst on the spare drive so i can update and call it the V drive and have every vst reside on this drive. REASON #2 MY MAIN REASON for doing this when i want to do a fresh install of the OS i don't have to spend the next 2 DAYS installing VST Software. I DO HAVE A CLONE of my drive but then when i update stuff i have the load the old Drive update do this do that too much hassle Thanks guys

I have VST's installed on a separate drive. This works fine for most, but there are a few which need to be installed on the C drive in order to be patched/updated. One such VST is BFD2...the patch/update programs are unable to locate it if it isn't installed in the default location. But even then, I have the BFD2 content (all 40gigs worth) installed on a separate drive. As far as not having to reinstall VST's after an OS reinstall, this generally doesn't work for some even if they're installed on a separate drive. Like any other program, they install some supporting files in the Windows folder, the Users folder and other similar places.

FWIW, when you do a fresh/new OS install you "MAY" have to reauthorize those VSTs, even though they still are installed. Installing the corresponding libraries on another drive (if they are instrument VSTs, is a time saver, those wont have to be redone. As Progmatist said , some VST installers plant files all over the place, including registry entries, so with a fresh OS install, the VST may not work ,since its registry entry is not there... BUT YMMV...

BUT YMMV... +1 Instead of installing the plugins to the SSD, I'd install the plugin dll files on your C: drive (in the appropriate VST Plugins folder/s)... and install the accompanying sample libraries on the SSD. That gives you the best of both worlds. Keeps install on the C: drive (standard) and the large libraries are on the SSD (speed and keeps backups of C: fast/convenient). If you need to re-install, it saves tremendous time. I've done this numerous times with Kontakt, Omnisphere, etc...

+2 to Jims comments, although I am using a 1.5 Tb drive for my libraries now, at present, holds 980 Gig of samples , . I do , however, have a 256 gig SSD for my C: drive and was able to get rid of my redi-boost and bumped my WE HD score to 6.8

I recently imaged my c: drive to another drive and when I launched SONAR and loaded a project from the new drive I started getting some nasty noise every 5 or 10 seconds. It turned out that my IK Multimedia plugins need to be re-authorized because when they are installed and authorized they are tied to that piece of hardware (hard drive). So when they were imaged to the new drive, they were not authorized on that drive. Seems like there could be a number of issues with various plug-in companies in how they install and authorize their plugins. Just be aware that even though you may have a separate drive for your plug-ins that changing a system drive still may require you to reinstall or re-authorize. Take care,

I am just now re-imaging my system drive. I got into trouble with my VSTs - I think because I tried to direct all the VSTs to my Samples Drive. The problem was that I ended up with VSTs in many places and couldn't figure out where anything was or being loaded from. This time around I decided to keep them on the C drive in C:\program\VSTplugins and C:\program(x86)\VSTplugins. In the process I realized that I could dictate where all of the VSTs (32 & 64) went except for a couple of instances. I ended up with C:\program files (x86)\steinberg\VSTplugins (or similar) folder with something in WaveLab7 and there was one of the Komplete7 packages that made it's own VST folder and IIRC one of the T-Racks singles. Everything seems much better though at this point. I've been careful to image between each manufacturers install just in case.

With a 64Bit OS, you really have to pay attention when installing VST Plugins. There's absolutely no standard for the installers. -Some will ping the registry to find the default VST Plugins folder. -Some will put the dlls in a subfolder under the main install folder. -Some will use C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins (which is a throw back to many years ago)... even though you have no Steinberg software. -Some will place both the 32Bit and 64Bit dlls in the same folder. -Some will create a VST Plugins folder under C:\Program Files -Etc... If you just accept the default install locations, you can wind up with a mess.

I will try it this week and see how it goes. 99% of the plugins i have are in the 64 bit cake vs folder. I don't mind a couple in the C drive but having most of them moved would be great for me. thanks
