Can one midi track send to more than one plugin?

Something I've always wanted to be able to do with a sequencer, but I've never been able to: Is it possible to make a single midi track send to multiple plugins/vsts? I usually end up just doubling the midi track, and routing the 2nd one to my second synth, but would love to find a way to not have to do this manually. Thanks!

The short answer is no, not with SONAR. But there are workarounds involving 3rd-party virtual MIDI cables and such. Or you can get brand R DAW software, which has it built in.

What are some examples of good 3rd party virtual MIDI cables? Will these add some latency?

Another simple way is to Clone the original midi track and check the Events and Link clips box, uncheck properties and effects. Then you can insert a new synth in the cloned track.  If you edit the original clip it will also edit the second cloned track.

If at some point later you want to be able to edit them independently right click on the clip and about halfway down the menu is unlink.  It then comes up with a box to be able to treat/edit  them as individual clips.

Personally, I think two tracks is the preferred way to do it (whether by cloning or by recording two tracks live simultaneously, which I often do), because it lets you tweak the velocity of each track to suit the synth, and use MIDI volume and other controllers independently. Also, it can be beneficial to be able to alter the phase slightly by shifting the timing of one track by a few ticks to alter the sound "image".

brundlefly's right: lorney's method using linked tracks is the way to go. Internally, you really only have one MIDI sequence that two or more tracks read from. Because there is really only one MIDI file, edits to one affect the other (virtual) tracks, too.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Well, if you use one instance of KONTAKT with multiple outs for the MIDI track, you can load two sounds sample instruments into KONTAKT and set their input to the same MIDI channel but route their outputs to two different audio tracks.

I do this with some custom BASS GUITAR samples where the AMP'ed instrument and the corresponding DI'ed sample instrument both get triggered by the same MIDI track.  I sampled them separately so that I could blend the DI signal to taste depending on the track.

Don't know if this helps anyone if you want to use two different VSTi's but this is obvious and doubt it will do you any good.
