Can someone recommend a DAW that has a PRV that actually works?

Copying and pasting multiple midi from multiple tracks in PRV is a hit-or-miss proposition. I'm about ready to throw my computer out the window.

Cakewalk, please own up to the bugs in PRV, and fix them.

Thanks.

It works perfectly here, maybe you could describe exactly what you're doing, step by step.

Just saying it doesn't work gives us no clue as to what's going wrong.

Same here.  The Piano Roll has always worked well for me.  If you described what you are doing and what results you are getting maybe we can offer some advice to make it work for you too.

X1 works great here on that as well...

mike, have you added the latest patches yet?
go all the way up to x1d man.

my guess is you might not have the patches installed or you might be missing something to make your life easier in the prv.

im not going to sit here and rub it in and tell you how wonderful it works.but it does the job well.

sometimes people cry out for help in different ways.
obviously i can tell by the title of your thread you need a little help and your blowing off some steam man.

hang in there and let me know about the patches.
also can you give a little more detail to the copy/paste issue your having?

    I'm using X1-D, 64-bit, with ASUS i7 laptop, 12 GB RAM.

    My main issues in PRV:

    1) When I lasso notes in multiple tracks, let's say, for two measures worth, the highlight bar at the top extends way past the two measures. Then when I paste (or paste special) to another location, nothing gets pasted in.
    2) Sometimes when I select & nudge (e.g. a measure at a time), additional midi gets inserted into the new location (after the nudge). I don't know where these notes came from, but clearly I didn't select them before doing the nudge.
    3) The track numbers in PRV don't match the track numbers in the track view -- and the ones that display in PRV are inaccurate.  In PRV, when I copy & paste special from one track to I another I have guess the destination track # -- sometimes it's one off from what is displayed in the track list (on the right in PRV).
    4) Sometimes when I lasso notes, and copy and paste to a new location, all midi gets copied into a single track, even though I didn't specify that in the paste options.

Those are some of the bugs that have been killing my inspiration. They don't occur consistently -- maybe 50% of the time, some bugs more than others.

I'm using simple instrument tracks. PRV seems to get confused by this -- i.e. track numbers in PRV in the track list are inaccurate. I usually have between 30 and 60 tracks in the PRV. I also use screen sets -- one for the track view and one for the PRV.

    1) When I lasso notes in multiple tracks, let's say, for two measures worth, the highlight bar at the top extends way past the two measures. Then when I paste (or paste special) to another location, nothing gets pasted in.

The extension past the end of the lasso point will probably be where the last selected note ends. That's what happens here. For the pasting issue press Ctrl+Alt+V when pasting and check your paste options. You may have deselected something there at some point.

Yeah, those are related to problems with simple instrument tracks. There's another thread about that somewhere. Until they fix it, you can probably get around it by temporarily splitting the simple track, then re-combining it when you've finished editing in PRV.

I've noticed some of the same problems. When using simple instrument tracks the numbering seems to get confused, which causes problems with pasting in the PRV. I must admit I never reported the bug, so I can't guarantee that Cakewalk actually knows about it. I kinda just assumed they knew, found workarounds and forgot about the whole thing.

If you Ctrl-drag and drop, instead of copy and paste, I think you'll avoid the problem. Another workaround is to do your pasting in the track-view. In other words, copy the notes you wish to copy from the PRV, go to the track-view, select the right track and position, paste.

I'm not at my DAW right now, so I'm writing this based on (possibly faulty) memory, but I think those suggestion will work.

In my case the extension past the lasso point makes no sense. It even happens when there's no midi data in the extra area that's added.

I have been relying on ctrl-drag -- however this doesn't work very well: X1 plays all the notes for all the midi that you're dragging (which is very hard on ears and CPU), and the sliding of the selected area stutters a lot while the CPU tries to catch up (the fastest laptop i7 CPU in my case). Sometimes when I do ctrl-drag, X1 becomes unresponsive for a minute or more.

I'm considering splitting the simple instrument tracks, but this will increase the complexity of my projects dramatically. E.g. PRV will be for all the MIDI tracks, while envelopes (for sends, volume, pan, and synth automation) will be for the corresponding audio tracks. It's worth a try though. Maybe I can figure out a way to simplify it.

In PRV, ctrl-alt-V (paste special) breaks sometimes, i.e. it doesn't ask you what track to paste into, and it picks a random track and start time. Lovely! I'll try saving, getting out of X1, and restarting to see if that fixes the problem.

In the paste special box, there is a "track start" selector to the top left of the box that should always be there, unless there's something funky going on with yours of course.

Unfortunately I found that X1 behaves far better on my listed desktop, than my more expensive XPS L502x laptop-Bigtime.

I only have a UA25-EX interface, and the latency was ridiculous with the laptop[among MANY other things].

Instead of upgrading the interface -RME Babyface/FF UC,I spent the same money,on a carefully chosen parts desktop,to see if the laptop, was the issue......guess what-IT WAS,X1 on my laptop is odd[and thats being nice],X1 on my desktop-I've yet to find a problem.

    1) I tried using Simple Instrument tracks when they first came out, but quickly went back to separate midi and audio tracks.  It takes more space for sure, but easier to work with - for me.

    2) Copy / Paste midi - vrs - Ctl-drag:  I wish Paste had a "paste in place" function similar to InDesign where if you copy an image from one page and paste into another page, it retains the same exact position.  The problem with Sonar is that you have to specify the start time when pasting - which is a pain.  To get around that, I instead use Ctl-Shift-Drag.  The Shift forces X1 to keep the midi clips in place.

Well, Sonar works fine.   I am suspecting that it's probably more about learning PRV in all it's minute details.

I prefer staff view for midi editing, simply because I was raised on staff based music. Others I know prefer PRV. As for me, I have tried it and found it a bit confusing so I stopped using it.

Most likely, you simply need to know more about it to get it to act right as you work with it.  (learning curve)

As far as learning curves go PRV does have that..in spades..for me.

I use both staff view and PRV here...for double the learning curves!!

That fixed this specific problem: after exiting X1 and going back in, paste special works as expected. Apparently X1 stability deteriorates while you're working in it, i.e. eventually you have to exit and go back in to fix this issue.
Still, the other PRV issues I've mentioned have not gone away.

The problem is I don't get a paste special box.

After exiting out of X1 and going back in the problem corrects itself. Go figure.

You need to press ctrl+ALt+V or select Edit--->Paste Special......

If you don't get a dialogue box appear by doing that then there is nothing on the clipboard to paste or something wrong with your installation maybe.

That's what I'm doing, and there's something in the clipboard, because it gets pasted -- all into one randomly chosen track at a random start location.

It seems to be a popular game to read the first couple words of someone's post, and post a reply to it. I'm having a lot of fun repeating myself. I have two dogs, one named Louie and one named Newbie. I'm looking forward to some Belgium Triple tonight -- I'm writing this here because I know no one is going to read this far. The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.

You may well be right about it being a bug, I'm not going to argue with you but I use the "Paste special" option all the time, always have done and it has never done anything strange for me. If it's a bug it's not a "all systems" bug obviously.

I can't say I've seen any other complaints about it either but I don't read every post.....

this can also happen if the MIDI EVENTS have a hard code for the CHANNEL.  what it does is not actually random, but it will paste X Channels down from the starting point.  for example, if you tell it to paste in track 4 and there is hard coded events for that MIDI CHANNEL set at channel 6, then it will paste the MIDI in track 10.  sonar will even create track 10 if it doesn't exist.

Good point! I remember this happening to me before I understood what was going on, and it was confusing at first. When trying to paste some midi events in the PRV and nothing apparently happens, it's often a good idea to see if the midi events have been pasted somewhere else. That might give you a clue to what's happening. Sometimes midi events can even end up in audio tracks.
