Can we get Sonar on Steam?

I know, weird thing to ask for...

And I totally understand if you don't like the cut steam takes for its distribution and maybe some of their contract details don't mesh with what you need.  But if Steam is out of the question for any reason, maybe you could make your installs similar to XLN's online installer, which is a little bit like Steam...

So, why am I even asking? Several reasons:

1) Over the versions, you keep changing the 3rd party tools supplied.  So installing Sonar after you had to wipe windows once again, or just cause you have a new hard drive or computer, which ends up happening way more often than I'd like, becomes a major undertaking, as you have to basically install every previous version of Sonar if you want some of the filters or synths they came with.  If there was an XLN alike online installer, where you can pick what you want to install from a list of all products you own, it would be a lot less of a headache...

2) Just because optional automated installs and updates are really nice.

3) It could also function like Windows system file checker, automatically checking, updating and repairing corrupted or outdated files when we have problems.
4) We're not allowed to transfer (sell, gift) the software anyway, so having it registered to one's Steam account wouldn't have any negatives for Cakewalk users, none that I can think of, anyway...

A popular online software distribution tool (65 million users) with a user client, that allows fully automated installation from their repository of software for which you own the license. Users still can choose if they want to buy the software directly from the developer or through Steam.

XLN's Online installer (Addictive Drums) is somewhat similar, for convenience and simplicity purposes, but of course, only works for XLN's stuff and nothing else.

The other day we had somebody who gained a considerable performance increase if they so happened to be playing grand theft auto at the same time. I guess this is the next logical progression ;)

IIRC Music Creator is, at least was, available via Steam. While it isn't quite the full meal deal of X3 Producer it is quite full of features. You might want to take a look at that.

not exactly the thing to switch to when you're already using X3 Producer?

Its good though, that means the Cakewalk guys are already doing business with Steam / Valve...

That's rather interesting, but sounds extremely implausible  ;-)

I'd rather not run games along with Sonar X3, but I'd love to solve the installation issue after upgrades, where its really time consuming to install the many excellent plugins from your old Sonar versions that have been removed from the newest version.

Of course any other solution to this problem would be just as well with me :)

It was rather tounge and cheek but had some basis in fact. It allowed a nvidia graphics card to go into the right PCI mode (using Sonar wouldn't trigger the right PCI mode, and consequently stuttering effects were experienced).

It's amazing how many hours I'd save if they just put the SONAR version the plugin originally came with in parentheses next to the installer tick box. Like, days and days of time! Someone once made a handy chart that's on this forum somewhere I've used...but it's a total pain.

No kidding!  Sounds like it would be a fairly easy fix for the Devs then, if they just have to tickle the Nvidia cards' Gspot at the start...

Or, whenever I settle down, I usually build some monster desktop, I'd rather use than anyone's prefab, be it computer or console...

Yeah, I gotta say at first I wasn't really sold on the online installer for XLN products ( I own most of them ) because of the requirement to have your DAW online to register.

But the more I use the interface and the convenience of having all your products in one place and updated correctly does appeal to me. I hate getting the Studio DAW near the internet but, as time marches on, its just a fact of life now I guess.

At least its not as bad as Waves they would rather you not actually 'own' anything. Jeeze!!

Re: Can we get Sonar on Steam? 2013/11/21 20:33:38 (permalink)
Downsides of Steam:

1. You have to be logged into Steam via their client all the time - as in on line.
2. Their server sometimes either refuses connections or goes off line. If that happens the software won't run. Not a situation I'd care to be in with a commercial client waiting to record something or working against a timetable. Not being able to run a game is irritating, not being able to run productivity software in an commercial environment could be a business killer.
3. I like being able to keep a copy of the installation files locally. That way, should Cakewalk cease trading tomorrow, I can still install Sonar and run it for the forseeable future. If I have to rely on software publishers making their software available for me to download every time I need to install, or for the publishers to have an account with an on-line service that verifies that software and gives me permission to run it, then I can not rely on being able to do that.

In short, the first version of Sonar that only becomes available via Steam or anything like it will be the first version I will not buy on principle and the version that loses Cakewalk my custom.

I think Steam offers the option of an alternative login which does not require you to be on-line all the time - have to login in periodically - once a month or whatever to get updates.
A couple of Cake folk talked about it here:

i've used steam for ~10 years, it's a very mature, stable delivery platform; it has an offline mode (you don't need to be logged on all the time) and you can backup your apps locally, to avoid downloading them again... having said that, i only use it for slaughtering zombies, etc

It has an offline mode, and unless you want to run an installation, you never need to leave offline mode.

Believe me, I was very critical of Steam at first, mainly because it it messes with consumer rights to sell or gift a used game to someone else, once they got bored with a game. That's what the legal concept of 'first sale' is for, so that corporations (artificial person) can't interfere with what a "consumer" (human being) does with his Product once its bought and paid for.

Of course new legal constructs are developed every day to deprive human beings of their former rights in this new, awful millennium of bank and corporate controlled governments, where there are revolving doors between certain corporations and the federal government, enabling corporations like Monsanto to write their own laws.  Remember, patents on living things were expressly forbidden, till Monsanto managed to get supreme court chairs for 5 of their lawyers, who promptly changed that, so Monsanto is now free to corrupt all life on earth with irresponsible genetic hacks for profit. Corruption reigns supreme.

So, I've calmed down about Valve's little breach, there's bigger fish looking to fry us.  And Valve is doing a good thing at the moment: moving their platform to Linux and pulling along much other software with them.  I think that's good, cause Microsoft is getting more conniving by the day.

Sounds like it's the way software like DAWs should have been released from the start! It also sounds like games should've been the LAST format to be released this way since the trade/resale value....

You do not need to re-install full setups of Sonar at all!

Just do a custom install and "cherry-pick" what you want, I once installed ONLY some studioware from an older install - all of about 200kb! Nothing else got installed! So to cite that one needs to run  full installation to get a particular plug is a furphy imo.

Thats all good and well, if you can still find those old disks after several times of moving.

If you need to download / order replacement disks, you'll be hard pressed to download just some soft synths you loved and spent hours and hours figuring out  ;-)

I'm not saying anyone should be forced to use Steam.  But it would be a help to some of us...

Cake should have their own online store model. I should be able to download a plugin, update/patch and products (like windows update) without every having to leave Cake (except when an app restart is required).

I don't know enough about Steam except my kid uses it for games.  Seems like it's *always* updating etc and snarking around in the background.

If it is unobtrusive and can *really* be completely SHUTOFF when *I* want then it might be ok as a place to keep your software installs organized etc.

But the SECOND it decides to change to force me to be 'logged in' etc like a dongle or some sort of challenge response or ??? whatever the marketing geniuses cook up - I pull the plug and live with what I have on a local PC.  That would mean abandoning any software company that throws in with them.

Yeah I guess - all my Sonar data is stored on backup drives/DVD's so no sweat to re-install any component. I use Steam (not for storage though - only because I have to run it to play games), but tbh, and generally speaking (ie not just Steam),  I think folks are becoming too reliant on "cloud" storage - I prefer the advantage of being able to access any backup or any program/data from my own "always available" resources.

I completely agree with you on that. I use 3 local backup drives and a cloud backup called crashplan just as an extra safety. But I failed to backup software disks like Cakewalk etc...  And when I need the disks, of course, I can't find them.

I stopped buying Google's Nexus gear the moment they started dictating to manufacturers not to put MicroSD card slots into them, in order to push people into their cloud.

You never know when censoring the mainstream media isn't enough for them anymore and they'll shut off the internet under some pretense. Aside from that possibility, I just don't feel like streaming my music from some server, if I can just play it from my device. Its a waste of bandwidth and if bandwidth didn't matter anymore, then providers wouldn't constantly be grousing about the cost of providing it, trying to institute rules to prioritize big corporate content over everything else.

Favorite toys: Sonar Platinum, Rapture Pro, D-Pro, Melodyne, Brian Hardgroove Collection, Z3TA+2, Mutant Revolution.
